Movie synopsis

Directed by Richard Donner (SUPERMAN, LETHAL WEAPON), 16 BLOCKS is a tale of corrupt police officers, a Grand Jury witness, and one cop who is trying to do the right thing. Jack Mosley (Bruce Willis) is weary. A lame leg and a love affair with alcohol make him a virtual joke at the NYPD. Tired and ready to head home, Mosley is assigned one last job before he can punch out: pick up petty thief Eddie Bunker (Mos Def) in lock-up and transport him to the courthouse where he is set to testify before the Grand Jury. Only 16 New York City blocks separate the two, but it might as well be a million miles. Soon, the officer and his charge find themselves under fire, becoming the target of someone who wants to keep Bunker from testifying. Escaping the initial attack, Mosley calls for backup only to discover that corrupt police officers, including his ex-partner Frank Nugent (David Morse), want Bunker out of the picture.Mosley surprises everyone--maybe even himself--by doing the right thing and saving Bunker from certain death. With only 118 minutes to get the witness to the courthouse before the case will be thrown out, Mosley pulls out every trick in the book. He maneuvers Bunker through the crowded, confined streets of Manhattan's Chinatown towards their destination, trying to avoid the police officers who are hunting them down as they race against time. Willis fully inhabits Mosley, a washed-up cop who is haunted by his past decisions, and Mos Def is right on target as Bunker, a chatty career criminal being hunted just as he is ready to turn his life around and make something of himself., IN THEATERS MARCH 3, 2006In New York City, a hard-bitten police officer (Bruce Willis) is in charge of escorting a chatty, upbeat witness (Mos Def) downtown to court. The walk proves to be one of the longest and most dangerous of their lives, as it is many people's interests to dispose of the witness.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"Bruce Willis gives his best performance in years -- his acting has a lived-in authenticity that pairs up beautifully with his still-potent star power."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (03/23/2006)

3 stars out of 5 -- "The action sequences are adept and the leads likeable..."
Total Film - Nev Pierce (06/01/2006)

More Thoughtful Than Your Usual Action Movie

Created: 02/05/07
I have read the other reviews of this movie on eBay and although I agree with the points made in many of them, I think a number of the reviews miss a key point in the movie. Yes, it is an action movie and yes, it deals with a broken down cop who still has the stuff to get out of tough jams (including a bus chase) ... but more importantly, this movie is primarily about redemption. Mos Def and Bruce Willis both give outstanding performances as "wounded and crippled" human beings with a lot of baggage. Still the resonant theme as voiced by Def's character, Eddy, is that "people can change". The central tapestry of the movie centers around the relationship between broken down cop, Jack Mosley (Willis) and petty criminal, Eddy (Def)and how the two of them help the other to overcome the emotional and behavioral baggage that they each must confront. This is an action-packed movie, but it is not your typical action movie that titillates with a lot of action, blood, gore and violence. It has a deeper, more thought-provoking aspect to it, especially if you pay attention to the interchanges between the lead characters. I loved this movie and the hopeful message that it conveys that, in fact, "people can change". I saw this movie in the movie theater and immediately knew that I wanted to add it to my collection. If you are interested in an action-packed movie with human dimension and human redemption ... then buy this DVD.

Bruce Willis - I think that says it all

Created: 04/08/06
I was looking for a movie that I haven’t seen yet with Bruce Willis in it. I did a search and “16 Blocks” was in the search and I have never heard about it. I did a little bit of reading about it and found it to be something I may like.

Not only did I watch it but my boss watched it too. He liked it so well he bought his own copy of it for his own collection. I guess that kind of says it all. I found it to be like the movie the Gauntlet with Clint Eastwood in 1977 - because of the bus. It will make you sit on the edge of your seat and ask yourself over and over, how in the world is he going to get out of this one. As a New York City policeman that is getting close to his retirement years is sent out on a last minute drop off before he goes home after a 12 hour night shift job. All he has to do is take a prisoner 16 blocks and drop him off at court before 10 AM. This is a setup and he walks in to it blindfolded. All of his years of experience on the force kicks in and shows that this old horse is what he used to be. Highly recommended and it is family orientated. It does have violence. There isn’t as much blood and gore as Bruce’s movies. The language isn’t as rough as most of his movies either. But the action, suspense and one you won’t figure out what happens next. It is a little slow taking off but that doesn’t last too long. I recommend you wear depends watching this one.

Spectacular Willis Movie!!!

Created: 08/01/07
16 Blocks is a Spectacular Bruce Willis Movie!!!

Corrupt cops, Gun fights, Mos Def, a deadline and Bruce Willis. These are just some of the things that make 16 Blocks great.

Mos Def is absolutely spectacular, and Bruce Willis is his normal self, a deadbeat cop. 16 Blocks features enough suspense and action to keep everybody happy. It also features 2 great endings.

16 Blocks is simply amazing. Bruce Willis does it again.

Final Verdict:

5/5

A very good movie. Acting was terrific. 16 blocks has a police officer with a suspect with lots of corrupt cops trying to kill them both. Bruce Willis challanges Minority Report and the Bourne Identity with this motion picture. Buy this one.

16 Blocks

Created: 01/10/06
16 Blocks is a slow moving, predictable, 118 minutes. Not up to the action movie pace of Bruce Willis' other headliner action movies.... this is more like a day in the life of a corrupt NYC cop.... at a donut-eating pace. There is one good sequence when the shots begin, yet it quickly transforms into a hunt and search sequence for the remainder of the movie. If you like action,
this isn't the movie for you.
