The First Branch Mint Cent - 1908-S Indian Head Cent - A Special Coin

The 1908-S made history as the first U.S. cent produced outside of the Philadelphia Mint for general circulation. This became possible because of a change in law a few years earlier which had previously prevented non-silver or non-gold coins from being produced elsewhere. Production of the 1,115,000 San Francisco cents ultimately minted in 1908 commenced in November of that year. ===== Given the historic significance and low mintage of the 1908-S cent, it was saved at the time and was pulled from circulation in subsequent years. The introduction of the Lincoln cent in early 1909 helped speed up the removal of the 1908-S cents from circulation. Today, while it is relatively easy to find well-preserved mint state examples available, it is extremely difficult to find heavily-circulated examples that are problem free. ===== Finally, I think that the 1908-S would likely be a much more popular, and arguably valuable coin, but for the 1909-S. It is clear that the 1909-S Indian Head Cent is not as historic of a coin as the 1908-S, but its mintage of approximately 1/4 that of the 1908-S makes the 1909-S the key San Francisco Indian Head Cent, effectively leaving the 1908-S in its dust as a semi-key cent. ===== If you have the opportunity to purchase a 1908-S Indian Head Cent, buy the best quality example that you can afford. When you own an example, know that you own a historically significant United States coin in that it is the first branch mint cent.

The Indian Head Cents seem to be hot right now, the 1908 s was the one I purchased and I thought the price was better than book,,,, I needed it to fill one of my holes, still looking for a bargain on other coins. The coin I received was in great shape and really has gained value by over 100 percent in the last 2 or 3 years. Indian heads seem to plentiful right now but could become harder to find if the price goes south..Just about any quality 1908 or 1909 s mint is in great demand, the 1877 is out of sight. In future years I only expect this coin to gain in value...Look for pennys with a good sharp "S" as that is the defineing characteristic for the 1908 s Indian Head...

If you can find a 1908 S Indian head cent, get it!! Its a key date coin and well worth the cost. Its the next to last year for the indian cent series, and getting harder to find at a low price as are all the small cents.

Coin collecting can be expensive

Buying coins on eBays has been interesting. It amazes me how expensive some of these coins become, with last minute bidding for the coin offered. If you are not interested in collecting over a long time, don't bother with coin collecting. It takes a lot of coins to make a collection, and if you are like me, there are always coins you want.
