Although we should call it a liberty dime, as that is what the design is, we call it mercury because of the wings. The wings were meant to represent "liberty of thought". Interesting enough, the reverse side of the coin is a column with bundles of sticks that were meant to light the way for senatorial processions. Interesting.

This dime was for an old boyfriend of mine who found me through Facebook. I'm widowed...he's happily married...we're both kind of sentimental about our renewed friendship of about fifty years ago.

The dime is an uncirculated silver, Mercury-head dime made in 1945...the year he was born. His birthday is today so I hope he was happy to see it. I told him if he ever time-travels and gets back to that year, to have a cup of coffee on me.

I bought this as part of a Christmas present for my grandson. He's started collecting coins, and has a folder for these dimes. He really liked the condition this one is in because you can still see the letters pretty easily. It came in a little cardboard , which I forgot the name of, that he likes. It frames the coin and makes it easier to see.
