2001: A Space Odyssey (Blu-ray Disc, 2007, Special Edition)

Stanley Kubrick, Keir Dullea|Theatrical release: 2002 | Rating: Not Rated

Movie synopsis

A four-million-year-old black monolith is discovered on the moon, and the government (while hiding the situation from the public) sends a team of scientists on a fact-finding mission. Eighteen months later, another team is sent to Jupiter in a ship controlled by the perfect HAL 9000 computer to further investigate the giant object--but on this trip something goes terribly wrong. 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY is a masterpiece of filmmaking. Director and (with Arthur C. Clarke) co-screenwriter Stanley Kubrick has created a visual and aural spectacle that stands as one of the greatest achievements ever put on celluloid. The film begins with the "Dawn of Man" segment, about the evolution of apes, and then ventures into the future, taking a look at what the world might be like in the first year of the 21st century. Kubrick's film is a triumph of technological storytelling, with stunning sets and a brilliant, overwhelming soundtrack. Long dialogue-free scenes sparkle with indelible images backed by powerful orchestral music, culminating in an unforgettable, inscrutable tale of birth and rebirth, human evolution and artificial intelligence, the past and the future.

The Space Odyssey

The title says it all. The movie is a true space epic, predating Star Wars as the film that high budget science fiction movies. Stanley Kubrick's genius masterpiece-spawning mind loams every aspect of the film. Kubrick's innovative 1968 movie looks spectacular even today (nearly a decade after the story's 'futuristic' setting thanks to the high-definition properties of the magnificent Blu-Ray disc.

2001: Blu Ray is stellar

Only the hairstyles of the female actresses date this fine Sci Fi epic. On Blu Ray, the sets(which must have been awe inspiring in the late 60s) can really be appreciated for the detail and beauty. I was slightly disappointed in the DVD version quality of this title and bought the Blu Ray to have a better viewing experience. Very happy I did.

2001 - A Space Odyssey

Created: 23/08/10
I can state unequivocally that 2001 is supposed to be in 2.20:1 aspect ratio. It was shot in 2.20:1. It was not shot in Cinemascope (or anamorphic Panavision), which is 2.35:1. It was shot with straight lenses in Super Panavision 70 (65mm negative, 70mm projection print with soundtrack). Super Panavision 70 is a 2.20:1 aspect ratio format. When you are watching a 70mm print in a theater you are watching 2.20:1, which was never as wide as the anamorphic formats.

Not to mention the fact that Kubrick went to the extraordinary effort of exposing his special effects composite shots as successive passes on the original undeveloped 65mm negative (after it being held sometimes in refrigeration for up to a year or more waiting for the next pass) so that all the composite visual elements are first generation on the original camera negative, rather than the cheaper and more common optical composite dupe negative inserts. Amazing. That is why it looks as good as it does. No optical negative generations.

A Beautiful Film...and one of the best executions of the 70mm format ever.

A true Visual Masterpiece.

2001 on Blu Ray

Created: 04/06/08
I AM A SCI-FI LOVER, AND THIS WAS A BREAK THROUGH MOVIE IN IT'S GENRE. ANY SELF RESPECTING SCI-FI FAN HAS TO GIVE IT PROP'S ON THAT BASIS. BUT THAT'S A CONCEIT, AND THIS MOVIE'S BLU RAY EDITION DID NOT MEET MY EXPECTATIONS.

THE BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT WAS THE LACK OF LOSSLESS DOLBY. ONCE YOU HEAR TRUE HD SOUND LIKE MOST BLU RAY DISCS, OLD FASHIONED DOLBY DIGITAL IS A LETDOWN.

ON THE BRIGHT SIDE THE CG EFFECTS WERE EXCELLENT.

BUT ONCE AGAIN THERE WAS A DISAPPOINTMENT IN THE VIDEO. THE BASIC MOVIE SCENES THEMSELVES SHOWED NO IMPROVEMENT. NOW I DO REALIZE THAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT 3 DECADES AGO, BUT THE VIDEO ITSELF WAS LITTLE, IF ANY BETTER THAN MY UPCONVERTED VERSION ON DVD.
