    Movie synopsis

Director Wong Kar-Wai's style reaches its fullest expression in his stunning film 2046. Picture-perfect period sets and costuming, finely wrought atmosphere, languid shots, glamorous cigarette smoke, amber lamplight, and allusions to film noir. 2046 is a meditation on memory, eroticism, love, loss, and longing which surpasses the director's beautiful, widely acclaimed IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE (2000) in terms of formal ambition and visual sumptuousness. With its intriguing, layered structure, the film follows the adventures of Chow Wo Man (Tony Leung), a womanizer who is writing a science fiction novel about a future year in which all memories are suspended. The film shuttles between the BLADE RUNNER-like world of Chow's futuristic novel (complete with androids and other metaphors of emotional disconnection) and late-'60s Hong Kong--where Chow writes from a hotel room, and engages in relationships with a series of beautiful, complex women (including the luminous trio of Gong Li, Zhang Ziyi, and Faye Wong). The film also journeys to Singapore and through the increasingly mysterious corridors of the protagonist's memory.2046 resists tidy plot summaries with its disjointed, zigzagging construction. Yet, coupled with Wong's rich cinematography and dazzling formal techniques, it is as fluid, associative, and labyrinthine as memory itself. Sliding between keenly detailed realism (Wong's camera can capture the subtlest flicker of emotion in a characters' eyes) and lavish, expressionistic metaphor, the film is a deeply entrancing experience. Even given its jumbled, sometimes chaotic narrative, 2046 creates a poignant, emotionally charged, and richly rewarding experience.

Like tapestry, a film that speaks differently each time

    Created: 02/01/09
If you are tired of predictable Hollywood story lines and like to explore your own thoughts on love, sexuality and the depths of what motivates men and women, this is an art film sure to please. Each time I have watched this film a different story has emerged. Beautifully shot, the director has brought depth, mood, and raw emotion to the screen, excellent soundtrack and cinematography. Not since Hero has a foreign film done so much for me. The film weaves a writer's fictional story set in 2046 with his current reality and life. We are taken on a fascinating journey rarely seen on film, descending into the desperate depths of love, manipulation of feelings, and raw emotions of desire. If you liked Moulin Rouge, Sin City, or The Big Blue, you will find this another great film. If you are looking for Disney style fairy tales steer clear. The film is subtitled, but this did not distract. I highly recommend this film for those who have felt the joy of love and the angst of love lost.

Lost love, Future love, happy love, hurtful love, 2046

    Created: 27/08/06
I recommend watching Days of Being Wild, then In The Mood for Love, and then 2046 (in that order). All three are Wong Kar Wai films, all with a similiar thread and similiar characters. Kar Wai puts emotion to film... rather than watching a movie, you are feeling emotions, as if rather than filming characters, Kar Wai has filmed the characters emotions... very haunting, surreal, and beautiful imagery. If you've ever been to an art gallery, and saw a picture that just by looking at it, brought tears to your eyes... evoked an emotion so deep that you didn't even realize it was there... this is what you'll experience in a Wong Kar Wai film.

2046 is a Beautiful and Involving Movie

    Created: 17/12/09
This is a beautiful movie, but perhaps difficult to understand if you haven't seen "In the Mood for Love" first. I didn't realize it had a sequal when I saw it. It is a fantastic movie with excellent performances by Tony Leung, Gong Li, and Zhang Ziyi. I would recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys Chinese cinema and is willing to watch something that delves into the complications of relationships and doesn't involve kung fu.

    Wong Kar Wai's 2046

    Created: 03/09/07
I'm a big fan of Asian cinema. I love Wong Kar Wai's films. 2046 is the third part of a three part series. It's difficult to explain the movie, as they all run together. I recommend this film, but not before watching Days of Being Wild and In the Mood for Love. Days of Being Wild is the first, In the Mood for Love is the second.

I HAD A VERY DIFFICULT TIME UNDERSTANDING PARTS OF THIS ARTISTIC MOVIE AND WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT TO THOSE WHO LIKE SIMPLISTIC SHOWS OR THOSE WHO WANT TO RELAX AND NOT DO TOO MUCH THINKING. I WOULD GIVE 2046 AN AVERAGE RATING. THE ACTORS AND ACTRESSES ARE GOOD, THOUGH...PRESTON3934
