Inspired by surviving a near-death experience while undergoing a surgical procedure in 2000, Clark-Sheard imbues these 13 cuts with a mixture of inspiration, grace, and gratitude. Like fellow gospel crossover queen Yolanda Adams (who appears on the thumping duet "Brand New Day"), this former musical prodigy enlists plenty of secular help in giving her message a contemporary spin. Serving as the tent-pole for this secular-spiritual revival is "Higher Ground," an all-star summit featuring Adams, Kim Burrell, Dorinda Clark, Mary Mary, and Missy Elliott.Karen Clark-Sheard also benefits from Elliott expanding beyond her hip-hop roots by lending her production talents to the aforementioned collaboration as well as the equally impressive "Only Call On Jesus," a spiritual call to arms loaded with sharply honed beats.
