Gone is the earnest, coffehouse folkie feel, replaced by squadrons of percolating synthesizers and snappy loops. Together with new writing partner/co-producer Lester Mendez, she seems to have worked out a way to mate Max Martin-style pop hooks with her own sometimes-introspective, sometimes-philosophical lyrics. There are plenty of songs that deal strictly with the vagaries of romance, but there's also "America," where Jewel gets overtly political, and "Stand," where she laments the failure of Woody Guthrie's visions in contemporary society. So while a casual listen might give the impression that yesterday's Jewel had become strictly a memory, there's a continuing lyrical thread on 0304 that extends like a dangling lifeline to the singer's old fans.

A different side of Jewel

Created: 11/04/07
I bought this because my sister had a copy and I thought it was decent. I am a fan of Jewel and this was the only CD of hers that I had not yet purchased. This CD features a more mainstream pop style than Jewel's typical acoustic compositions. The song "Fragile Heart" was reason alone for me to buy this album. This a slower, more tender version than the remake that she did for her current album, "Goodbye Alice and Wonderland." This isn't a CD I'll listen to repeatedly, as I prefer her older, folk type music, but it is a refreshing change for Jewel fans. She sounds like she is having fun while singing, and listening to this album usually puts me in a good mood as well.

I love Jewel, but since she crossed over to a more "pop" sound i just dont get it. i love her old stuff and own all her cds, and yes even the newer pop ones that are absolutely horrible. i do not listen to them. their probably the best shape cds i got. her old stuff is awesome and its so easy to sing a long with. Jewel rocks but this cd sucks! Bad move Jewel!

0304 by jewel

An unJewel like title to an unJewel like cd. I won't pan it, it has some redeeming moments, but overall, not a Jewel like selection of songs, and an unJewel overall sound. Much of it is just noise. Glad she dumped this "new" format and image and went back to what she does so well, folk, not pop. Glad I bought the cd cheap. Maybe others knew something I didn't. They didn't bid on it.

Jewel 0304

Love the new pop sound! Jewel once again proves she can do amazing wonders with her voice! The song "Haunted" displays a beautiful raw 'haunting' side of her while other songs are just plain FUN to listen to. It actually took me a few days to get used to this new sound she's delved into but once I did I couldn't stop playing the CD!

Totally Different kind of Jewel CD, But a Nice Change

Created: 06/09/06
This CD is FUN! You'll want to dance around the house to some of the songs. It's very reminiscent of the 80s, but with a more eclectic dance feel. It is very different from previous Jewel CDs, so if you're looking for soft melodies this is not the CD for you. Give it a chance, you might like it!
