Album Notes
Personnel: Kenny Loggins (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Jim Messina (vocals, guitar, mandolin); Merle Bregante (vocals, drums); Jon Clarke (flute, recorders, oboe, soprano, tenor & baritone saxophone); Al Garth (fiddle, recorder, alto & tenor saxophone); Michael Omartian (piano, Clavinet, organ); Larry Sims (bass); Milt Holland, Victor Feldman (percussion).Personnel: Jim Messina (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, mandolin); Kenny Loggins (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Merle Brigante (vocals, drums); Larry Sims (vocals); Al Garth (violin, fiddle, recorder, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, horns); Jon Clarke (flute, recorder, oboe, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, horns); Michael Omartian (piano, Clavinet, organ, keyboards); Victor Feldman, Milt Holland (percussion). This collection of Loggins And Messina's hits came out at the end of 1976, after the group's final release earlier that year failed to re-ignite their once red-hot career. Both the title and cover art seem designed to show that, despite the breakup, there were no hard feelings. The liner notes, written by the duo, describe a warm and mutual songwriting partnership. Considering the heights the group had reached, the decision to split up made sense, and at least one of the pair (Loggins) went on to achieve great success as a solo artist. But their legacy of hits is considerable.Given the limitations of a single record, this collection does a good job of gathering the most essential tracks from Loggins And Messina's five studio albums, from the joyous island fantasy "Vahevala," through the touching "Danny's Song," to the hymn-like "Peace of Mind," as well as hits like "Your Mama Don't Dance." Because of time considerations, a much-shortened radio version of "Angry Eyes" is included instead of the brilliant seven-minute album cut; but the lengthy musical excursions that characterized Messina's contributions to the duo are represented here in the multi-section "Be Free."

The Best Of Friends - Loggins & Messina

Created: 26/12/07
I just bought this CD after yrs of having it on tape, which was lost some time ago. If you're in the need to hear what REAL music sounded like, this is the piece to get. The clarity of their sound, as a duo, is matched by no other. The musical composition of each cut is as close to perfection as it gets. Listen to "Vehevala" & "Watching the River Run" with the headset to experience this perfection it to its fullest. A must have work of not just music, but one of true auditory art.

very good, long ballads to play while driving. Most people are upset over the short Angry Eyes song, but I bought it for other "hits" like the kind they play on XM radio all the time. It just seems like fairly soft mellow music to me.

This is a fine trip down memory lane. A few years back I gave away all my vinyl records, including my Good Friends record. Glad to have this music back in my library.

What a great cd! I think I had the album and my friend borrowed it... a few years ago??? It's nice to relax and listen to the old stuff, or blast it in the car and sing all the words at the top of your lungs!

Good representation of the duo's collective genious. Sound quality is good. A little on the short side for a compilation.
