(percussion).Recording information: 3121; Paisley Park Studios.Arranger: Prince.During the 1990s it looked as though Prince, once one of the most vital and inventive artists in the industry, was in all ways over. Yet 2004's MUSICOLOGY redeemed the man who seemed lost to obscure re-christenings and self-indulgent double-albums by proving he could still deliver the goods with strong songs and tight, funky musicianship. 2006's 3121 does MUSICOLOGY one better. Not only is it full of fine writing, superb production, and infectious, high-energy jams, it is Prince's most focused and consistent effort in a long time. That 3121 doesn't rival masterpieces like PARADE and SIGN 'O' THE TIMES is not surprising; Prince doesn't invent at such a furious pace here. Instead, he sticks with what he knows best--forward-thinking, idiosyncratic funk--and does it to perfection. The rolling stomp of the title-track opener, the synth-driven "Lolita," and the down-and-dirty "Black Sweat" tell us this will be an album full of body-movers, while beautifully downtempo tunes like "Te Amo Corazon" prove the man hasn't lost his sense of songcraft. MUSICOLOGY put Prince back in the driver's seat, and 3121 finds him revving up the engine.

Editorial Reviews
3 stars out of 5 -- It's a guitar-centric album, the Purple One strumming a rare acoustic....The album's penultimate track, 'The Dance', mixes slightly sinister voices with strings and a stirring grand piano solo.
Mojo

4 stars out of 5 -- [T]here are teases of samba, rhythms as heavy as James Brown, and slow jams as airy as prime Isleys.
Uncut

4 stars out of 5 -- As on MUSICOLOGY, the beats get pretty wicked here -- wildly canted, eccentric, exciting.

Prince embodies pop artistry...

Created: 20/05/07
I've been a Prince fan for a long time, and bought this disc a couple of months ago. At first I gave it a listen, and kind of wrote it off as good, but not great. I recently caught his 3121 tour, which caused me to give this CD another listen. Now, I think its one of his best. First, it captures his range going from his new torch song "Satisfied" to the pure funk of "Black Sweat".

Also, its got some serious movers like "Get on the Boat" and "Lolita" where the NPG is in rare form. Finally, "Fury" is a ridiculously cool tune allowing Prince to channel Hendrix.

This really is a great CD, and you should buy it if you want to witness one of the greatest pop artists who is still at the peak of his abilities.

Make no mistake - he is one of the greats. I LOVE PRINCE. But I was glad to find this CD used. "FURY", "BLACK SWEAT" and "TE AMO" are among the best. This album rocks with production, drums, sound quality. But for someone that has delivered some of music's best hooks and pop songs, this is a bummer. It is all over the place. Not a cohesive record. I feel like he slapped this together. While there is no mistaking his musical talent, I am sad to realize that he has peaked commercially. PRINCE is one of the most underated guitar heroes of our time. He should stick to that more. But at this point in his career he is probably not worried about selling more records to please the masses, so more power to the purple one.

3121 Album Review

Created: 06/04/11
This is a CD you'll want to get. Prince executes love songs (Te Amo Corazon, Incense and Candles, Satisfied), dance-able tracks (Black Sweat, Lolita), and everything in between beautifully. The album is uplifting and upbeat, similar to Lotusflow3r or Musicology. It's a solid album that I really enjoy. If you like Prince's music post-Jehovah Witness conversion but you're on the fence about getting this album, buy it.

Get Funkdafied with the New Prince CD

Created: 10/08/06
Prince fans, new and old will drip "Black Sweat" over this CD. Prince will keep your foot tappin' to his funky beats. His music is full of rock, jazz, funk and soul, with lyrics that touch you deep. His ingenious style will keep you "Satisfied". Prince's 3121 will get you to "The Dance" for you cannot stop moving to "3121". Spread "The Word" that Prince is releasing the funk. You will feel "Beautiful, Love and Blessed" that you purchased this CD. When I first popped this CD in, I thought the old Prince was back. If you like his old sound with some of his newer styles, you will "Love" this CD.

Hhhmm...

Hey, I love Prince, but only found a few songs that I really like. Jams like "Lolita" and "Incense and Candles" electrify, however, most other songs (i.e. "Te Amo Corazon") are just a little to breezy for me.
