This inevitable best-of follows him down the long, strange road of his career. Mellencamp's initial success came via a bar-band anthem ("I Need A Lover"). He then turned his attention towards writing about life in the Midwest ("Small Town" and "Pink Houses"). Along the way, the self-named "Little Bastard" embraced roots music by incorporating fiddle and squeezebox into his sound ("Paper In Fire"), setting the stage for the later success of alt-country acts such as Uncle Tupelo and The Jayhawks. Always a fan of late '60s rock and soul, Mellencamp paid homage to the T.A.M.I. shows of his youth in "R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A." and added a cover of Terry Reid's obscure "Without Expression" to this package of otherwise previously released material.

Editorial Reviews
...by keeping one foot planted squarely in his native Seymour, Ind., Mellencamp put the pop in populism and artfully bridged the realms of town and country. - Rating: B

Some of the Greatest Hits, by Mellencamp!

Created: 15/08/10
I decided to buy this Cd, because it acutally had my favorite song Cherry Bomb..But after receiving it.
I realized most of the songs on here(CD), is what Mellencamp was famous for...I was actually in High School, when some of these songs were released..

If your a collector or a fan of Mellencamp, and like a touch of Soft Rock.. You have got! to add this to the collection..The whole CD is so kool, an oldie, but goodie for me.. You will not be disappointed...

Believe it or not this is my first CD, by Mellencamp. Although I did like his music back then. Making up for lost time, I guess you can say... I just enjoy a variety of good music, from the yester years..*_* Enjoy!!

"The Best That I Could Do 78-88" CD by John Mellencamp

Created: 17/01/09
I was looking for a CD by Mellencamp that contained his best songs from a certain era, and this CD sure fit the bill. The price was also great. Price and quality is one of my main driving forces. I also purchase CD's because it is less expense to upload songs to my IPOD. It also leaves me a physical CD to use in my car.
