Movie synopsis

GALAXY QUEST is a satirical comedy that pokes fun at the influence science fiction shows such as STAR TREK have had on their audience. The cast members of the cult sci-fi television series GALAXY QUEST now earn their livings appearing at conventions and grand openings, led by their bombastic captain Jason Nesmith, played by Tim Allen. When an alien race--the Thermians--arrives on earth, it appears that they have mistakenly appropriated the show's culture as their own, thinking the series was actual fact. Desperate for help in battling the evil General Sarris, they bring the actors with them into space to save their planet. A surprisingly smart and funny send-up of the science-fiction culture and the influence television has on the world at large, GALAXY QUEST is a comedy that even nongenre fans can enjoy, with terrific turns by Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Sam Rockwell, and Tony Shalhoub.

Star Trek spoof is hilarious!

Created: 05/09/08
Making fun of the original Star Trek series is nothing new. Comedians have been doing it for years! You've seen it done in standup routines as well as skits on various shows. Now comes the 1st feature length motion picture to poke fun at the ground breaking, but low budget vintage space series.

Tim Allen stars as Jason Nesmith, an actor who's only claim to fame is the fact that he played Captian on the long defunct TV series "Galaxy Quest". The show, like the real 'McCoy' has an enormous cult following & Nesmith makes the rounds at conventions with his former crew. Nesmith loves the attention & feeds off the adoration of his fans. His crew is not so enthusiastic. Gwen DeMarco (Sigourney Weaver) is the lone female & is pretty much tired of being ogled by fan boys who only ask her questions about her breasts, Alexander dane (Alan Rickman), a classically trained British actor who once played Shakespeare, is now forced to wear an alien headpiece & must continually spout his catch phrase over & over for the amusement of the fans, Tony Webber (Daryl Mitchell) is a former child star all grown up now whose youthful enthusiasm for the whole business has waned, only Fred Kwan (Tony Shaloub) seems even remotely entertained by the whole business.

One day, at a convention, Nesmith over hears a couple of non fans making fun of him. He realizes that his whole career is a sham & that send him into drunken depression. Nesmith is visited by a group of people he thinks are just fans asking for his help & he agrees to take part in their "little production". He is beamed up to a ship & destroys the bad guy, assuming it's all just a low budget film. He soon finds out it is not fake, these are real aliens & he has just incurred the wrath of a real vicious alien bad guy, General Sarris, who he really didn't destroy! He manages to get his whole crew sucked into this adventure & many hilarious moments take place as Nesmith tries to correct his mistake. There are tons of references to situations from Star Trek both amusing & accurate. Nesmith & crew are placed in many situations that should be horrifying, but end up just being funny!

Any Star Trek fan will surely get a kick out of this satirical look at their favorite TV show! Even casual fans will find this very amusing! & for those of you who have never seen the show at all, this is still a very funny movie! One of Allen's best!

A Must for any Star Trek Fan

This is a hilarious Star Trek send-up about a group of has-been actors riding on the coattails of a long-ago canceled TV show. All of the stars (Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shaloub, Sam Rockwell, and more) are at their comic best and make a terrific ensemble. Although familiarity with the Sixties TV show and the Trekkie culture make this film particularly funny, I think it stands on its own merits as well. The special effects -- particularly the make-up of the bad guys -- are outstanding. The special features, particularly the deleted scenes, are entertaining.

A hilarious movie

Created: 20/07/06
Galaxy Quest was a sci-fi TV show, and now the actors do nothing but conventions and other special appearances in character. Somehow a race across the galaxy received the transmissions and re-created the ship and culture. When an odious villain threatens them, they come to get Cmdr. Taggart (Tim Allen) to help them. On the second trip, the whole crew comes. The actors have to really play their roles to save themselves and the ship.

Sigourney Weaver gets to play the ditzy blonde communications officer, Tawny Madison, and you can tell she had a ball doing it. The rest of the cast is great, too! If you like science fiction and comedy, you'll love this. And it's a must for any Star Trek fan.

Comedy pure and simple!

Created: 06/07/08
This movie has so much in it that it is difficult to seperate out distinct points.
The farce of Star Trek and the like genre... the oddness of the fanbase. Convention reality. Passing notes to Shatners "Get a Life!" speech.

And the sets... costumes, SFX and acting is actually fantastic.

Plot spoiler: Washed up has beens from an 80's TV Star Trek style show get hired by Aliens... fantastically portrayed by all actors!... to save them from a big bad half lizard half bug alien.

Of course they bumble their way to success and win the day! In great fashion.

Tim Allen and Sigourney Weaver are perfect. The bad guy from Die Hard is incredible beyond belief. And the dude that plays the looser Guy makes you believe he is a looser!

Best lines:
"Didn't you guys ever watch the show!"
"We have to get out of here before something kills Guy!"
"It has never been 'successfully' tested!"
"I see you managed to loose your shirt."

You need to watch this film if you like Science Fiction. But you don't need to know much of anything about Sci Fi to enjoy it. It is a comedy pure and simple.
