    Album Notes
Full performer name: Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band.Disc 4 of GROW FINS is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks as well as live performance footage from Cannes, France in 1968, Amougies, Belgium in 1969, Detroit, Michigan in 1971 and Paris, France in 1973.Personnel: Don Van Vliet (vocals, tin whistle, harmonica, soprano saxophone, piano, Mellotron, keyboards, synthesizer); Mark Boston (guitar, bass); Alex Snouffer, John French (guitar, drums); Frank Zappa, Rich Hepner, Doug Moon, Jeff Cotton, Bill Harkleroad, Elliot Ingber, Denny Wally, Jeff Moris Tepper, Richard Snyder, Lucas (guitar); Victor Hayden (bass clarinet); Eric Drew Feldman (Mellotron, keyboards); John Thomas (synthesizer); Art Tripp (marimba, drums); Jerry Handley, Roy Estrada (bass); PG Blakely, Vic Mortenson, Jeff Bruchell, Robert Williams (drums);Includes liner notes by David Fricke, John French and John Corbett. An exquisitely packaged five-disc set, GROW FINS is manna for the Beefheart obsessive, though anyone who isn't already a fan might find it rough sledding. Disc One consists of demos from the original lineup of the Magic Band, featuring Ry Cooder, which were recorded in 1966 and 1967. Some of these songs ended up on the first Beefheart album, SAFE AS MILK. Disc Two is live tracks from 1968. Disc Three, the holy grail for most Beefheart collectors, is outtakes and alternate takes from the TROUT MASK REPLICA sessions. Disc Four only has a few more TROUT MASK outtakes, but it's an enhanced CD with fascinating live footage from four 1968-1973 shows. The last disc mostly features '70s live material and demos from the late '70s/early '80s period of Beefheart's last musical efforts. The sound is variable, but if you're a Captain Beefheart fan, GROW FINS is simply essential.

Exhaustive and career-spanning, this is certainly not for everyone. Expensive and somewhat hard to find, you have to really want this to buy it. Some of the audio is sketchy and it does get somewhat repetitive. The 100+ page attached booklet is very nice with lots of cool photos. A much-to-be-appreciated package for Beefheart fans.
