McLaughlin; Jill Furmanovsky; Mark Fisher.Pink Floyd's showmanship culminated in The Wall, an album designed to be a theatrical experience. Waters had a brilliant idea for the show -- an actual wall would be constructed across the stage, then the band would play behind it as Gerald Scarfe's animations were projected on the wall and giant inflatable puppets danced on-stage. Pink Floyd intended to preserve the experience with a concert film. That plan didn't come to fruition because the footage was botched, so documentation of The Wall remained the province of bootlegs until the 2000 release of Is There Anybody Out There? Skillfully edited together from the handful of Wall shows Floyd performed between 1980 and 1981 (much of the recordings date from shows at Earl's Court in London), the album replicates The Wall live -- which, of course, was a replication of the record, only with visuals. There are two songs not on the studio album: "What Shall We Do Now?," a tune pulled from the record at the 11th hour (early pressings still listed it on the sleeve), plus "The Last Few Bricks," which was an instrumental at the end of the first act that gave the crew time to finish building the wall. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Editorial Reviews
...For sheer balls, these live performances, seamlessly woven together, knock the stuffing out of the somewhat antiseptic original studio recording...
Mojo

...Delivers the audio spectacle of the performance in its entirety, while also featuring 'What Shall We Do Now?,' which was included in 'The Wall's film version only, and 'The Last Few Bricks' which had not been released previously in any form.
CMJ (20000501)

3 stars out of 5 - ...What's truly amazing is how music this deep and uncomprimising sold so well. Water's...portentous instrumentation and use of repeated motifs was almost classical in conception and execution...

"The Wall" consists of these continuous tracks that tell several stories:

Sex, drugs, rock n roll, war, loss of autonomy, public humiliation, and charades are among the various themes that "The Wall," or rather Roger Waters, contends with by making musical social commentary.

For this rendition of "The Wall" Pink Floyd added: Snowy White, Andy Roberts (guitar); Peter Woods (keyboards); Andy Brown (bass); Willie Wilson (drums); John Joyce, Stan Farber, Jim Haas, Joe Chemay (background vocals).

The themes in "The Wall" are heavy laden ones. The music is a match for the intensity of the emotions. At times, for instance, in "The Trial" hard driving guitar accentuates the emotions of the man on trial for showing, "feelings, feelings, of a most peculiar nature" . . . [and then] "tear down the wall!" is his sentence for being ruled guilty by a judge for having showed feelings. But there is also great humor in that particular scene when it begins with the lyrics, "Good morning worm your honor . . . ." "Another Brick in the Wall," and "Comfortably Numb," became top forty radio hits in the 80's. "Young Lust" also became a favorite on the dance floor with quite the refrain: "Ouh I need a dirty woman, ouh I need a dirty girl."

"The Wall" in CD form needs to be seen in DVD form also to understand how the lyrics are threaded loosely together. I would have given it an award for originality and the deep introspection of the lyricist. If you need something to distract you from the weight of the world on your shoulders, "The Wall" is heavy enough to make you feel lighter.

the Wall re-imagined

Created: 26/09/09
This double live album tops the studio version in every possible, more emotional singing by both Waters and Gilmour. Some of the best sound I've ever heard for a live show. Skip on buyig the studio Wall, save your money and buy this, also includes a few new songs and no annoying pauses between songs. Highly recommend buying from Chicago Overstock.

Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall Live 1980-81

The live version is so much better than the studio, you just have to take my word for it, or buy it! You get to hear the crowd react and sometimes sing along. This is deffinantly a must buy for any Pink Floyd fan. When thier live, its like they get more into the songs, and the solos just keep going. You actually feel like your'e there with them, they just bring the whole room to life. You must buy this album if you don't already own it.

I am a huge Pink Floyd fan so this is a no brainer for me, the live version contains more songs that the studio version of the wall, and completes the album a lot better.
