Album Notes
Counting Crows: Adam Duritz (vocals, piano); David Bryson (acoustic, electric, 12-string & slide guitars); Dan Vickrey (acoustic & electric guitars, sitar, background vocals); Matt Malley (12-string guitar, bass, background vocals); Ben Mize (drums, percussion, background vocals).Additional personnel: David Immergluck (pedal steel & electric guitars, bass); Joel Derouin, Eve Butler (violin); Matt Funes (viola); Larry Corbett (cello); Dennis Herring (keyboards); David Lowery, Chris Seerfried, Gary DeRosa, Cinjun Tate, Charles Gillingham (background vocals).Recorded in Hollywood, California in 1998.Looking beyond the puerile zeitgest that cluttered the charts in 1999, Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz continued to be the epitome of the sensitive lyricist, using songs as a canvas for what was going on in his life. Like its predecessors, THIS DESERT LIFE contains an abundance of musical riches. Camper Van Beethoven/Throwing Muses producer Dennis Herring shares the helm with Cracker's David Lowery. The duo vigorously supports the Crows' homespun leanings while at the same time tapping into the same vein of Americana from which many insurgent country bands draw inspiration.Duritz is a denizen of the subconscious who delves into the intertwining relationship of memories and dreams amidst the chugging pace of "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby." On the lushly bittersweet "All My Friends," he looks back at his life in the hopes of finding a future mate. Counting Crows offset the dark mood of THIS DESERT LIFE with a few less severe-sounding numbers. The bizarre imagery of "St. Robinson in His Cadillac Dream," is undercut by chiming mandolin and sweeping organ. "Hanginaround" is akin to "Hey Jude" with a hip-hop beat. Also included is the hidden track "Kid Things," a folksy rocker reminiscent of early-'70s Rod Stewart.

Editorial Reviews
...a sandbank of relentless, parochial misery....amiable...yet, generates a worrying, overwhelming sadness...
Mojo

...whether the band is working out an up-tempo number or looking deep into itself on ballads, each track on THIS DESERT LIFE is compelling, powerful and poetic.
CMJ (19991108)

4 stars out of 5 - ...pushes [songwriter, Adam] Duritz to the fore, enhancing his narrative flair on the lengthy Mrs.Potter's Lullaby and the string-drenched 'All My Friends'...
Q (19991201)

6 out of 10 - ...strikes the same oddly compelling, melancholy chord as its predecessors - a crafty, referential rock that should play well to licensed psychotherapists and VH1 viewers alike....[DESERT LIFE affirms] that Counting Crows are genuinely affecting songwriters...
Spin (19991201)

3.5 stars out of 5 - ...a couple of the best things they've ever done....[Adam] Duritz rises to the occasion of a stellar arrangement featuring discursive strings, spacey synths and river-deep basses...

Wonderful Album!

Created: 05/03/08
This was a truely enjoyable album as to be expected from Adam Duritz and the Counting Crows. The best listens out there are albums that have only great tunes. There is nothing more disappointing than buying a record where some of the songs are not worth the listen. Fortunately, this and all the Counting Crows albums I have purchased have been "repeat button" purchases. The album's highlight is "I wish I was a Girl" which is one of those songs that has the ability to hit home if you've ever been at the end of a relationship with someone you truely loved.

Crows Rock!

Created: 06/09/08
I like the newest album best (2008) "Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings" and their 1st album (1993) "August and Everything After" is my favorite. This one is ok. If you are not a huge fan like I am I would reccommend purchasingtheir better albums mentioned above. You may be purchasing for a specific hit like "Hanginaround" then it works for this purpose if you don't do mp3 downloads. I reccommend doing a download of the songs you like on this CD.I own all 5 CD's by Counting Crows and know nearly every song by heart. This is an honest review and I hope this helps someone make their purchase decision.

A little bit country

Created: 11/04/08
I picked this one up in Seattle for 50 cents.
As always, Adam Duritz amazes you with his beautiful lyrics.
Such a talented band.
This album has a slight country feel, but is nowhere near country music.
Still rock n' roll.
Still Counting Crows.

excellent-natural,operates on several artisitc levels

As usual, the plethora of great guitar compositions intertwined with meaningful, albeit painful, lyrics make this another great accomplishment for the band.

The more you hear the tunes, the more you find yourself captured by the lines and rifts. Adam and the guys do all the work for you:Just sit back and go for another great ride!!!

Not very commercial-Colorblind was slay your emotional strength from the first few lines!

I got this CD a few years back when it came out. I've lost it somewhere, and I just HAD to have another copy of it. Awesome alternative rock album.
