America's Sweethearts (DVD, 2001)

Joe Roth, Julia Roberts, John Cusack|Theatrical release: 2001|Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Gwen (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Eddie (John Cusack) are AMERICA'S SWEETHEARTS, two wildly popular celebrities who share their love on and off the screen in this farcical romantic comedy. But a messy breakup sends Eddie to a New Age Hollywood healing center and Gwen into the arms of her current affair, a Spanish bohunk short on charm (Hank Azaria). When their relationship troubles begin to threaten their superstar celebrity status and the release of their final film together the studio heads call in legendary press agent Lee Phillips (Billy Crystal) to helm the troubled film's press junket. Julia Roberts costars as Kiki, Gwen's personal assistant and sister who has always lived to please her demanding diva sister. Once overweight and severely self-conscious, Kiki's life revolves around her sister's ridiculous demands in this send up of ego-driven movie star vanity, penned cleverly with cynical insider wit by Crystal and Peter Tolan. Phillips manages to gather the warring superstars and gaggles of press together at a remote desert location for the all important press junket where his best laid plans begin to unravel in this hysterical parody of the movie industry replete with neurotic actors, eccentric crazed directors (Christopher Walken in a gem of a cameo), maniacal studio heads, and gossip-starved press who will do anything or anyone for the next big story.

A gem in hiding

Created: 06/01/11
This movie contains so many stars that it's hard to keep track, but actually, that works to its benefit. John Cusack, Julia Roberts and Catherine Zeta-Jones are a triangle composed of two sisters involved with the same man, while Billy Crystal (in one of his best screen performances) is a publicist for a movie company trying to reunite (or present the appearance of a reunion) of two stars who made several pictures together while married, only to have their marriage fall apart when the wife (Zeta-Jones) becomes involved with an egotistical Spaniard (Hank Azaria).

The supporting cast includes Stanley Tucci as an obsessed movie exec, Christopher Walken as a flaky director, and Alan Arkin in an hysterical turn as a self-help guru who can be bribed.

This is a hilarious slam on the movie industry in general and self-absorbed, self-indulgent stars in particular.

Okay - had it's moments. John Cusack and Hank Azaria are the only thing that saved this film. Catherine Zeta-Jones was good. Julie Roberts was boring. Billy Crystal should have left out the dog crotch scenes - didn't add to story and not entertaining.

Ermmmmmm Julia Roberts.....Billy Crystal.....Catherine Zeta Jones.....etc. HUGE names for a run-of-the-mill, pretty much stale movie. It had its moments, like all movies do - but on a whole, I was pretty disappointed. Its not going into my keep-collection, though it WAS watchable.

Julia Roberts and John Cusack is the only good thing in this movie. Disliked the story line, slow moving, couldn't stay interested and spent more time fast forwarding than watching. This is one of the weakest movies with Roberts and Cusack that I have ever seen. Save your money!
