Movie synopsis

WINDTALKERS begins quietly--with widescreen aerial shots of clouds that gradually clear to reveal the beautiful mesas of Monument Valley. A bus collects Navajo volunteers Ben Yahzee (Adam Beach) and Charlie Whitehorse (Roger Willie). It's 1943, and the U.S. has developed an indecipherable secret military code based on the Navajo language. Yahzee and Whitehorse are to be trained as code talkers. Then John Woo's Pacific war film erupts into violence, with a savage battle that has one survivor, Joe Enders (Nicolas Cage). Badly wounded and feeling guilty at the loss of his companions, Joe recuperates in Hawaii where he is helped by a sympathetic nurse (Frances O'Connor). Joe disguises his hearing loss and he is promoted as Yahzee's battlefield bodyguard. Ordered to "protect the code at all times," Joe must prevent Yahzee from being captured. At first, Yahzee and Whitehorse, whose bodyguard is Ox Henderson (Christian Slater), are subjected to prejudice--particularly from Rogers (Noah Emmerich). But when the unit is shipped to Saipan, the Marines begin to appreciate the code talkers.Director Woo has created a powerful drama. The visceral battle sequences are strikingly filmed and there is fine acting from Cage, Beach, Willie, Slater, Emmerich, and Frances O'Connor, who portrays the poignancy of love in uncertain times.

Windtalkers

My own Great Uncle Jimmy was in WWII, and he was a Marine, he didn't talk much until the later half of the 60s, about what he did. Except, when he did mention it, it was top-secret. He was to keep an eye on his navajo code talker. My mother said it would make a great movie.Jimmy said: that will be the day. They will never get the full recognition they deserve.
John Woo and NIcholas Cage, did a fairly good job, in breaking the audience into a small story line, explaining the job of the windtalker.A language the japanese did not know about. They knew english, but they did not know the navajo language.A language, so old that only Navajo's know. The Navajo Indians did a great service to our Country in helping the war by using their own language on radio waves that the japanese were willing to kill any american marine or soldier to get to that language.
Great battle effects of Saipan, I heard a Marine tell me at the theatre, it was real close to what it was really like.Tex a character in the film, yes, there were rednecks in wwII as well.
Overall, a small story line to explain the advantages of having the Navajo in the war, to aide a winning and decisive plan.
I gave this film a 5.
Great special effects.Great acting. BUt, foremost, it was given a 5, for the Navajo's who never really will come out and say they deserve their own film.
Semper Fidelis to the Navajo Indians who helped us in WWII, and all future wars as Marines and Soldiers.

A good movie about a little-known topic.

Created: 18/11/09
I bought this movie because it concerns a topic which remains relatively unknown to the general public: the special contributions made by some Native Americans to their country during the Second World War. There was not a lot of detailed information about the specifics of the job done by the Navajo Code Talkers but this was, after all, a drama and not a documentary. It does address some of the ignorance and bigotry which was prevalent in much of American society at the time.

The movie was, I thought, reasonably accurate in its historical and technical details. The battle scenes were certainly graphic enough to convey the message that war is, indeed, Hell. All in all, I thought this was an entertaining and, to some extent, thought-provoking movie.

If you want to know the real story, pass on this one...

I thought, based on promos for the movie, that this film would focus on the role the Navajo played in WWII. Specifically, the utilization of their native language in military communications and the importance that it played in the war. Instead, this film was nothing but a thinly veiled drama loosely "based" on history. It only serves as a vehicle for Nicolas Cage to gain some sort of cred as a "hero." Perhaps his agent wants an image change for him--who knows? It never explained how or why the Navajo came to be used--only that their language would be the new, unbreakable code to be protected at all costs. Very, very lame example of a unique event in history twisted and trashed by Hollywood. A real crime, especially for young people who see this garbage and accept it as 100% historical truth. Does a real disservice to the Navajo. Only redeeming factor to rate it below average? Great CGI, that's it.

First off, who doesnt like Nicolas Cage?
Secondly who doesnt like War movies?
This movie has some great action, an awsome story, and did I mention its based off of true military events? The wind talkers were Navaho indians who were radio operators in WWII.
Worth to rent or buy.
