Movie synopsis

Based on Elder John Groberg's memoirs, THE OTHER SIDE OF HEAVEN, Mitch Davis' feature debut stars Christopher Gorham (A LIFE LESS ORDINARY) as John Groberg, a 19-year-old missionary who goes to Rarotonga to convert the native Indians to Christianity. In the process, he has to face a number of frightening events that change his life forever. Hungry rats eat the soles of his feet, he is almost killed by a hurricane that devastates the island so that their food supplies run out and he starves, and he is caught in a storm at sea and nearly dies until he floats to safety. All the while he is reassured and strengthened by the sweet letters from his fiancée, Jean Sabin (Anne Hathaway, THE PRINCESS DIARIES). The film veers on the fantastic and is peppered with nostalgia; a full moon peeks through soft fans of tree branches, and Jean spends much of her time gracefully gowned in frilly fifties frocks. Many members of the cast and crew are New Zealanders and Miriama Smith and Nathaniel Lees are both well-established New Zealand actors.

DVD The Other Side of Heaven

Created: 17/03/10
A small-town teen, 19-year-old John Groberg, leaves his girlfriend behind in Idaho Falls to go serve as a Mormon missionary in faraway Tonga during the 1950s. For three years, Groberg's letters are the couple's only link, as he shares his struggles to relate with the exotic Tongan people and his evolving perspective on life. The drama is based on Elder John Groberg's memoir, "In the Eye of the Storm."

Good True Story and Inspirational film

Created: 20/08/10
I saw the movie, and bought an additional copy. I love true life stories put on film, especially ones that inspire and leave you with a feeling of happiness. This is a good movie, that expresses the devotion of a man's love and dedication, a truly compelling love story. But, this love story exists not only between a man and a woman, but between man & God. Even for those who are not "into" religion, this story is far more than that. It displays one's feelings of fear, uncertainty, strength, friendship and faith. It shows you the life of a young man who ventures our on a mission, faced with the difficulty of acceptance in another world, facing the storm (life's & weather), rebuilding and flourishing by his belief and love of one woman and faith in God.
I bought this movie as a gift for my nephew and new wife, who too are going to be venturing out in the mission field. I hope they find it as compelling and uplifting as I did.

Great movie

Created: 23/03/11
This is a great movie. The whole family can watch this. The story/plot is very interesting. It didn't end the way I thought it would. It's about a mormon missionary, but the story could be about any other denomination of missionary. I pray you enjoy it as much as I did. GOD BLESS.

GREAT MOVIE!!!!

Created: 29/05/10
No language, no nudity, no violence and yet a great story line and well acted! Don't let the title fool you. It's the account of a young Morman missionary and his trials as he tries to reach the people of Tonga and his faithfulness to "his girl" back home. True story. Well worth the watch!!!

Nice family movie.

I originally watched the movie back in 2003. Since then the Idea of the name Okipoki has been in my head. Now I had the opportunity to see it with my entire family (and my grown children) and we have really enjoyed it.
Disney created a nice film about the power of will and determination.
