That evocative phrase should not be taken in the standard teen-alienation/rock-cliche way, but rather in a more expansive, spiritual context, because this quartet is of the Christian pop bent. HAVE I EVER TOLD YOU nevertheless displays an impressive command over secular pop-rock idioms. The opening cut "Watching Over Me" is a good example, shifting back and forth between modern pop moves and Beatles-like touches. The tracks that follow find the group engaging in everything from lightly skipping breakbeats to anthemic, Collective Soul-style rock epics. Naturally, the connecting thread is the unabashedly spiritual lyrics, dealing with Jesus, faith, and worship.
