Movie synopsis

Andy Stitzer (Steve Carell) rides his bike to his stockperson job at Smart Tech, has a nice apartment filled with collectable toys (in their original packages), and plays videogames every night before bed. He's also a 40-year-old virgin. During a poker game with his coworkers David (Paul Rudd), Jay (Romany Malco), and Cal (Seth Rogen), talk turns to sex and it becomes very clear that Andy doesn't know what he's talking about. His friends become intent on remedying his situation, and their advice leads to newfound confidence for naïve Andy. But when he develops true feelings for single mother Trish (Catherine Keener), Andy finds that all the sex advice in the world won't help him navigate the choppy waters of an adult relationship. In Andy, Carrell has found a perfect comic creation who is hilarious, lovable, and rooted in reality. Rudd, Malco, and Rogen are also perfectly cast as Andy's cheerleaders. The script, by Carrell and first-time director Judd Apatow (producer of TV's FREAKS AND GEEKS), is consistently funny, and--despite its relentless crudity--treats its nerdy protagonist with the utmost respect. This rare quality and its high laugh-to-joke ratio make VIRGIN one of the most enjoyable comedies of the decade.

The 40 Year Old Virgin

Created: 09/01/07
In my opinion, this unique movie is a hit- especially if you like the acting style of Steve Carrell (sarcastic and stupidly funny) AND can get around the fact that the storyline contains MANY references to and graphic descriptions of sex that are sometimes quite crude. If you can't see the humor in this sort of thing- or at least get past it-- you definitely will NOT like this movie.

Andy (Carrell) is a socially awkward 40 year old who has never "done the deed." He makes the horrible mistake of revealing his "secret" to his buddies from work during a poker game and his life is forever changed... His buddies vow to help him end his virginity and begin giving him a bunch of LOUSY advice about women, which of course he follows. They also have a lot of fun at Andy's expense, poking fun of his "situation." Meanwhile, Andy meets a woman he really likes. They start dating, but he is afraid to tell her he is a virgin and is actually AFRAID to have sex with her. Not knowing he is a virgin, she totally can't understand his apparent lack of sexual interest.

One thing I really found refreshing about this entire sex-obsessed storyline is that although Andy is ostracized for his virginity throughout the movie, the point that staying a virgin was HIS CHOICE and that he was ultimately saving himself for the right person- even at age 40- is driven home in the end. (Although I have to say that point almost appears to have been thrown in as an afterthought, as it only comes up at the very END of the movie.)

40-Year-Old Virgin best comedy of 2005

While being laugh-out-loud funny and irreverent, "40-Year-Old Virgin" manages to impart a lot of heart and compassion. Steve Carell, brilliant in "The Office," plays Andy, a nerdy stock guy at an electronics store who's never been laid. His coworkers decide to remedy the problem by giving him all kinds of horrible advice on how to score with the ladies. Andy finally meets Trish (Catherine Keener), and realizes that he doesn't just want sex; he wants a relationship. My favorite parts are the chest waxing scene and the Bollywood musical number at the end.

Just like sex, you'll want it again and again

Steve Correl finally gets a movie of his own and it is a doozy of a good one. Steve plays a 40 year old virgin who is working in an electronics store ala Circuit City or Best Buy. He eventually falls the character played by Catherine Keener (Academy Award nominee for Capote).

This movie is not designed to be high brow comedy by any stretch of the imagination. The movie is along the comedic lines of Anchorman or Old School. It is very funny though not quite as funny as the previously mentioned movies. Each time I watch it I find something new in it. You'll laugh until it hurts, but it hurts sooo good.

Pure Fun...

Steve really has it down in this one. He is a true comic gem and really shows his stuff in this funny and surprisingly sweet film. Character development is really well done and rare by todays movie standards. With a society that is so caught up in losing their virginity as quickly as possible, showing that you can wait for love and the right person for your first time is really refreshing for a change. Also showing the many sides of how men look at and chase women from the splendid supporting cast is really a treat. You will laugh hard with this one. I hope Steve has a long and rewarding film career, because he is really one of the few comic actors out there that is shining right now and really deserves a fantastic career in the future. Paul Rudd really is becoming quite a comic actor as well, and is super funny in this one. Remember- Sex is great but sex with someone you love is wonderful.

Yes it's crude -- but you can handle it!

I never laughed so hard in my life!

This movie was side splitting from the moment the opening scene began with Steve Carral mounting his Schwinn, to the all anticipated finale when the cast breaks out into a 70's song parody (literally). I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this movie, and since buying it on the release date have watched it at least 5x, and each time I notice something that I didn't see the last time I watched it. Steve Carell is a genius, he knows what we want to see and provides comedy in a way that hasn't been seen since the likes of early Eddie Murphy. His ability to morph into his characters and provide the audience with a true sense of how the character feels is amazing. He explores topics in new and inventive ways and allows us to laugh, really belly laugh so loud that you will need to rewind the DVD just to hear the next line because you were laughing so hard at 1 line, the next was inaudible over the laughter! Truly a great movie experience! If you love to laugh, and don't mind naughty content, well, then I recommend this DVD to all mature audiences looking to escape the mundane everyday torture we refer to as life. 2 very big thumbs up for The 40 Year Old Virgin.
