Album Notes
Package includes bonus DVD.Jay-Z/Linkin Park: Jay-Z (rap vocals); Mike Shinoda (vocals, piano); Chester Bennington (vocals); Brad Delson (guitars); Phoenix (bass guitar); Robert Bourdon (drums); Joseph Hahn (sampler). In keeping with rap-rock crossovers dating back to Aerosmith and Run-DMC, MTV used its ULTIMATE MASH-UPS show to put Jay-Z and Linking Park on one stage. The result is COLLISION COURSE, a combination DVD/CD package that crystallizes the meeting of New York City's Jay-Z with California rap-rockers Linkin Park. With LP MC/vocalist Mike Shinoda doing double-duty as the EP's producer, the results flow nicely over six tracks. Jay-Z's rapid-fire rhymes in "Jigga What" fit hand-in-glove amid the pounding guitars and howls of Linkin Park's "Faint." And the Jackson 5-sampling "Izzo" ducks and feints in a way that makes it a nearly seamless match with "In the End." Most impressive is how Jay-Z's seminal thumper "99 Problems" boldly wedges itself between the thunderous bookends of Linkin Park's "Points of Authority" and "One Step Closer." The audio portion, of course, is only part of the fun; the DVD features the entire live performance, along with a documentary on the MTV special and behind-the-scenes footage.

Linkin Park & Jay-Z - Collision Course

Linkin Park & Jay-Z - Collision Course

01. Dirt Off Your Shoulder / Lying From You
02. Big Pimpin' / Papercut
03. Jigga What / Faint
04. Numb / Encore
05. IZZO / In The End
06. Points Of Authority / 99 Problems / One Step Closer

Mike Shinoda has done an amazing job of producing this mash-up album, blending and bending the rhymes and beats to make every song sound fresh and giving a decent sized spin on the original songs.

I don't agree with some of the fans saying that there should have been more songs on the album. I'm pretty sure that they've tried and tested quite a lot of songs mashed together, and if these are the only ones that sound awesome, then so be it. However, I wouldn't have minded one or two completely new songs. That would have been the icing on the cake.

I also completely disagree with the notion that Linkin Park have "sold out". Anybody who thinks that they have a say in what their favorite band does or doesn't need to get their heads checked. No respectable artist would stay in the same style of music or same music format for their entire career because "The Fans" say so.

If the artist has any respect for his/herself, then they should realise that if they want to try out new formulas or ideas, they shouldn't worry about what the current fans will think, because they're more likely to gain a new type of fan with a new style of music.

Dirt Off Your Shoulder / Lying From You is an awesome way to kick off the album, mixing Jay's beats with Linkin's edgy guitar riffs. I love the guitar/drum beat on this track when it kicks off, as well as the chorus. "Kick (kick) That (that) Dirt Off Ya' Shoulder" fits perfectly with Lying From You's guitar riffs.

Big Pimpin' / Papercut is a Jay-Z style song, with Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington altering the lyrics of Papercut to fit the mold of the Big Pimpin' beat and vibe.

Jigga What / Faint is a Linkin Park styles song, with Jay-Z rapping over the Faint sounds. When the guitars from Faint kick in, the song is SICK. As I said above, the live song does Jay-Z more justice, but this is still fucking amazing.

Numb / Encore is the first track to be released as a single, and that was a great choice to make. It takes what is probably Jay-Z and Linkin Parks best songs of their latest albums and mashes them together to create an amazing song. Both Numb and Encore are both about endings of some sort, so putting these two together is a perfect match. I absolutely love the piano parts of Numb, and with Jay-Z rapping over them, it gives the song a type of uplifting feel. One of the best songs on Collision Course.

IZZO / In The End took me a few listens to get used to, but I love this track now. This is another Jay-Z style track, and Chester and Mike have nailed the different keys of the lyrics from In The End. Chester's "It starts with one" lyrics fit the mood of IZZO to a T.

Points Of Authority / 99 Problems / One Step Closer is without a doubt the best track on the album, and a superb way to finish of the mash-up. Mike does an astounding job of using Jay-Z's rhymes. I never used to think he was that great a rapper, he's surprised me here. 99 Problems already has a rock sound to it, however I think that Points Of Authority and One Step Closer also gives 99 Problems a harder kick to it. Using Points Of Authority for one half of the song, and One Step Closer for the other half is a bold move, but it's worked. Amazing...

The album, on the whole, is pretty solid stuff. I'm a Linkin Park fan, however, and if you're a Jay-Z sorta person, you might not be as enthusiastic - this sure ain't hard-core rap. LP, on the other hand, has always had some lighter rap from Mike Shinoda (who mixed this CD, so I see), so Jay-Z compliments their sound pretty well.

Bonus song on DVD! -It's Going Down

Created: 08/02/08
There is a live song on the DVD that they didn't include on the CD. The song is "It's Going Down" but it's called "Sound Check" on the menu.

These mash-ups go together pretty well, but unfortunately there are only 6 tracks on the CD. Good stuff.
