Movie synopsis

Fans of HIGH FIDELITY and ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND will be charmed by this quirky film that sheds a linear plot in favor of a memory-driven look at a failed romance. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (BRICK) stars as Tom, a greeting-card writer who dreams of becoming an architect and finding his true love. Zooey Deschanel (THE HAPPENING) plays Summer, a vintage-looking beauty whose ideas about love are entirely modern. As Tom remembers his 500 days with Summer, his mind jumps from moment to moment, largely thinking of the good times in their trouble-filled relationship.Indie darlings Deschanel and Gordon-Levitt are perfectly cast in this sweet, funny film that infuses the typical romantic tropes with reality. Anyone else would have caused audiences to hate Summer, but Deschanel is adorable enough that she still endears herself to viewers. Arthouse favorite Gordon-Levitt hasn’t played a traditional romantic lead since 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU in 1999, but here he proves equally adept at portraying Tom’s sweetness and his neuroses. Music-video director Marc Webb makes his feature debut with (500) DAYS OF SUMMER, and it’s easy to see influences of his past work. The soundtrack boasts songs from Regina Spektor, Doves, Feist, Wolfmother, and, of course, The Smiths, the band that brings the couple together. Webb also adds an innovative style to the dramedy, combining a naturalistic look at love with a non-linear plot, animated vignettes, and a triumphant musical sequence. The film’s mixture of cynicism and romance makes it perfect viewing for happy couples, the recently dumped, and the hopeful singles in the audience., Indie darlings Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt team up for this realistic look at romance. Gordon-Levitt stars as Tom, a lovelorn young man who examines his failed relationship with Deschanel’s Summer, a woman who sees love and relationships with a cynical eye. This 2009 Sundance favorite also stars Clark Gregg, Minka Kelly, and Geoffrey Arend.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"[The] compelling premise is given the rueful temporal hopscotch of ANNIE HALL, adapted to two twentysomethings and new cultural references..."
Film Comment - Nicolas Rapold (07/01/2009)

3 stars out of 5 -- "Screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber and director Marc Webb show a real insight into the contemporary audience by creating a movie that almost literally alternates between scenes of a relationship's glorious beginning and the details of it falling apart."
Box Office - Ray Greene (07/14/2009)

4 stars out of 4 -- "[A] delightful comedy, alive with invention....There's a little black and white, a little musical number, a little Fellini, which is always helpful in evoking a man in the act of yearning."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (07/15/2009)

"Much like ANNIE HALL did for a previous generation, (500) DAYS OF SUMMER may be the movie that best captures a contemporary romantic sensibility."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (07/17/2009)

"[A]n original romantic comedy....It bristles with energy, emotional and intellectual, as it flits about the dizzying highs and weeping-karaoke lows of a passionate entanglement."

"(500) DAYS OF SUMMER finds just the right scale and tone, neither trivializing nor melodramatically overstating the delicate feelings it explores."
New York Times - A. O. Scott (07/17/2009)

"As Gordon-Levitt matures and age begins to burrow into his boyish face, he's become a relaxed yet still cerebral performer....[Deschanel] intrigues by holding her cards close to the vest."
Movieline - Movieline Critic (07/17/2009)

"Marc Webb's bright bauble of a boy-meets-girl comedy is a rueful tribute to the wisdom of hindsight..."

Check It Out!!

Created: 01/03/10
The film's opening makes it clear: This is not a love story. It is a story about love. Told in a non chronological fashion, we see 500 days in the relationship of Tom (Joseph Gordon- Levitt) and Summer (Zooey Deschanel). For those who have seen 10 Things I Hate About You, this is an evolution of that story told in a more realistic fashion. While Joseph Gordon-Levitt pretty much plays the same character, he adds gravitas to the ups and downs of relationships which all men go through at some point. Zooey Deschanel brings her playful carefree attitude to Summer, which the movie itself is quick to point out has a very strong effect over men. While most people expect this to be a love story, it's not. It's a carefully crafted story about relationships and the highs and lows we all experience and how we focus on the highs more than the lows. The quirky humor and the wittiness brought out in the film covers the very introspective dissection of a relationship. While the ending is somewhat expected, it serves as the movies last laugh. A must see for romantics, indie film appreciators and mainstream audiences alike, this movie is the guide to growing up all boys need to become men. Especially, once they see the Plate scene. How Life Really Is

Created: 23/12/09
Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Lookout) is Tom, an average guy with an average job who is moving through life looking for that special someone to share it with when he meets Summer (Zooey Deschanel, The Happening) and instantly falls in love. Only problem is Summer is not looking and is not falling in love with Tom.

This begins the 500 days of their relationship, if you want to call it that.

Tom is looking for one thing and Summer is not, and their relationship is played out over the next 500 days where the viewer is shown their lives, good and bad.

This is a wonderful movie that deals with the truth of how many relationships go in real life.

Anyone who enjoys a good laugh and a good cry will love this movie.

Get it, its worth the price.

500 Days of very realistic Summer

Created: 08/08/10
I really liked this movie because although it falls under the chick flick genre, it's really realistic. Tom and Summer have an awesome and seemingly non problematic relationship but as Summer says in the movie "what always happens, life" happens and they don't end up happily ever after. They both grow and find new people but it's obvious that Tom really loved Summer no matter what happened. I like how refreshingly truthful this story is! It's strange because I didn't like it at first when I was dating this one particular guy who was very much my Tom because I didn't like how the movie ended but after we broke up, it was just so truthful. I also liked how the things Tom and Summer do is not over done, it' s very much what real couples do (Ikea trips, getting a loose eyelash off of Tom's face and making him blow if off with a wish etc.) I also liked how it was filmed, it's not a straight 1-500 but a mixture of going back and forth between the beginning and the very end until it catches up in the middle and progresses. Over all, 500 Days of Summer is a very well done movie that is impressively captivating in a non showy way
