Journey to the End of the Night (DVD, 2007)

What should a movie do?
Tell a story. Not all stories need contain explosions and the like. This tale revolves around a dysfunctional Father-Son duo against the backdrop of Sao Paulo's red-light district. The cinematography is dark and bleeds colors in every scene, presumably to convey the continuous aura of never-ending nightlife. The director refuses to predefine the heroes and bad guys, preferring to let the story meander along, knowing full well that we will eventually draw our own conclusions. Every character seems to have a story that they'd rather not tell; some 'closeted skeleton', if you will. As the story unfolds, you will grow to dislike certain characters, pity others, and perhaps root for a few to escape their hell. In the end, as the sun rises, it seems to wash away all of the grit and grime of the previous night's violent escapades. All in all, this movie is different, and in that difference lies it's power.

Not captivating, weak plot

The plot is weak and the acting is not very good. A dark movie about a drug transaction with some violence and some action. The characters are poorly developed and the movie is not the least bit interesting. I watched it today and I do not understand the point of the movie.

This was a good movie. Most Def is a great actor. He has really evolved over the years. You really have to stay into the movie to keep up with the characters. I would watch this again. It was a welcomed change. I didnt expect to enjoy it, but i did.

Scott Glenn characters

He chooses characters that have a soul & all the human flaws life carves into them. So many turns in this movie for all the people & a surprise ending. Also his son not being half the man Dad is-and blaming Dad.What a rush.Mos Def also in this -good performance.
