The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Blu-ray Disc, 2008)

Andrew Dominik, Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck|Theatrical release: 2007|Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Based on the 1983 novel by Ron Hansen, THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD captivatingly depicts the final few months of the legendary Jesse James's life. He was 34, and his days of ruthless robbing had dwindled, yet his fearsome reputation continued to swell. With an abundance of nickel-books retelling his brutal gun-slinging adventures, James (portrayed by Brad Pitt, in one his most convincing and moving roles) had become a symbolic hero for many Americans, and a dazzling tabloid icon for the 19th-century media. A particular young man seduced by the wonderment of James, the shifty Robert Ford (a breakthrough performance by Casey Affleck), wormed his way in as a James groupie, in the hopes of snagging a coveted spot alongside his brother Charley (played by the always affable Sam Rockwell) as one of the bandit's cronies. Ford, fiercely insecure and painfully aware that he would never be taken seriously by James (who, ever-plagued by paranoia and skepticism, found Ford's earnest obsession a bit unsettling), grew increasingly angry with his idol, leading to a destructive path that ultimately ended in the anticlimactic death of Jesse James--and brought the treacherous Robert Ford the notoriety he had always wanted.Although this film takes place in the late 1800's, its eerie relevance to modern-day celebrity-obsession scandals is astounding, and adds a fresh scope to what could be viewed as just another cinematic western. Director Andrew Dominick (CHOPPER) furthers the film from its genre by banishing clichéd bullet-infested showdown scenes, instead embracing the relationships and interactions of the outlaws, and creates a mood of brooding and contemplation with exceptional camera angles and lighting. His intensely sophisticated approach to filmmaking illustrates the darkest corners of the characters, and insightfully provides a deeper, heartfelt portrayal revealing what the men might have been like behind their masks.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert F

Created: 18/06/09
Well, I believe Brad Pitt did a good job, being like Jesse James. No one likes the Robert Ford character. Each actor did a great job of old western acting. The scenery was very imaginative, with the snowy backgrounds, and settings. Afleck did a great job,but a very weird character thats for sure. a FUNNY scene took place when bob brother went to talk to Jesse james brother about being sidekicks,so Jesse James brother told him, there will be no more robberies, and there will be no reason for sidekicks, so you can go and write that in your journal. Talk about a funny line, and the tough talk of a cowboy. This movie has a good swagger to it, but its sad that Robert Ford was a coward and shot Jesse James in the back without his guns. Not too mention with his back turned.
History proves in the old west if you shoot someone in the back, instead of a official gun fight, you are a coward.Overall it was a good movie, and produce very well. Brad Pitt as I said before acted very well, and acted just like Jesse James.

Such a great movie

Created: 12/12/09
This movie is one of the best westerns of all time. It could be shorter and still be as good. Most of the people I've talked to about it said they were so bored that they turned it off before it was done. But if you watch the whole thing, its really about the last hour that MAKES the movie. It's a pretty historically accurate depection of the death of Jessie James (brad pitt), and the stalker/freak named Robert Ford (casey afleck) that killed him. Ford stalked and knew everything about Jessie James, who was a HUGE celebrity of his time. He eventually joined James in a robbery and then began to live with James and his family. He wanted the celebrity that James had, but knew that he didnt have the characteristics necessary to obtain it. So he got his fame by killing James. He was turned into an instant celebrity, and made a fortune re-inacting the murder in a touring play. It's said in the movie that more people could identify Robert Ford during this time than the president of the United States. After Ford started to regret his actions and settle down, he to was murdered by someone that just wanted the fame that Ford had. It's truly a great movie. Give it a chance, but it is almost 3 hours long and could be told in under 2.

Very great movie and pretty accurate

Created: 12/10/10
Brad Pitt was simply amazing, as was Afleck. There's been many Jesse james movies in the past but none have been as close to accurate as this one. Very well put together backgrounds, deep characters and a clean narriation helps understand the transitions during the story. Good action scenes and dialog is crisp. Must see if you're into western style movies and good blurays that "pop" on screen!

The Assassination of Jesse James

Created: 19/08/09
Brad Pitt does a good job. The multiple character, elusive criminal in which he plays. Casey Afleck (Ben's little bro.)plays an excellent part. He is playing a Jesse James wanna be. The movie is a little to slow for my liking.
