Dan in Real Life (Blu-ray Disc, 2008)

Peter Hedges, Steven Carell, Juliette Binoche|Theatrical release: 2007|Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Just as LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE did in 2006, DAN IN REAL LIFE reveals that Steve Carell is an actor who can do more than just comedy. He's won both accolades and awards as bumbling boss Michael Scott on THE OFFICE, but there's a greater depth to this performance as a single father and man in love. Advice columnist Dan Burns (Carell) has his hands full with three daughters that he's not willing to let grow up. The girls still grieve for their mother who died four years ago, and Dan hasn't made any attempts to date. So he's pleasantly surprised when he meets Marie (Juliette Binoche) at a bookstore when he goes to his parents' Rhode Island home for the annual family reunion. But his joy is short-lived when he discovers that she is dating his brother (Dane Cook), forcing Dan to hide his feelings and chemistry with Marie.Carell adeptly balances his role's humor and heartache, while Binoche (CHOCOLAT) is radiant as ever. Comedian Cook (GOOD LUCK CHUCK) shows surprising talent as the third leg of their love triangle. Through his duties as director and co-screenwriter, Peter Hedges deserves much of the credit for creating a film that is sweet without being sappy. Even though he's working with a far bigger budget than he did for his directorial debut, PIECES OF APRIL, he still maintains the feelings of intimacy and honesty that made that film such a critical favorite. What could have been a standard romantic comedy of errors turns into a strong film that goes deeper than many of its peers in the genre. DAN IN REAL LIFE also succeeds thanks to its soundtrack from Norwegian indie pop musician Sondre Lerche. The singer's compositions, both originals and favorites from his career, perfectly suit the film's tone and moods.

Not what I was expecting... but I LOVED it!

Created: 11/05/08
This fun-spirited romantic comedy is not what I was expecting from Steve Carrell- yet I enjoyed it just the same. We are used to seeing Carrell depict stupidly funny, socially awkward and politically insensitive characters in such films as Anchorman and The 40 Year Old Virgin. And of course he may be known best for his role as the dry-humored, jerk boss from The Office. The character he plays in this film is markedly different. Although some of the same social awkwardness and dry humor still applies, this time his character is also a grieving widow, a responsible father and passionately... in love.

Advice columnist and author Dan Burns has his hands full as a single parent of 3 teenage girls. He was deeply in love with thier mother, who became ill and passed on 4 years ago. Since that time he has devoted all of his attention to his girls and his work and he has not been interested in dating... That is until a chance meeting at a bookstore (while on vacation to visit family) with a woman named Marie (Juliette Binoche). The two have an instant connection- and he knows he is in love. His joy, however, is short-lived once he discovers that Marie is dating his brother... What unfolds is a mix of humor and heartache as Dan attempts to conceal his feelings for Marie and the chemistry they both share to keep peace within his family.

If you enjoy romantic comedies and can appreciate Carrell in a slightly more serious role I think you will LOVE this movie, just as much as I did!

One of the best movies I'll remember in a long time!

The storyline was put out beautifully and if you're looking for a movie that's mixed with comedy, drama, and love...this movie has it all! I'm a huge fan of Steve Carell and it was really interesting to see another side of his acting even though he still had his sense of humor. With two big comedian stars the other, Dane Cook, in the same movie they seem to even make the movie even better! I don't want to spoil the story, so I encourage you all to give this worth a watch. Guaranteed this movie will touch your heart!

Dan in Real Life

This movie really captures Steve Carell's genius. For those of you looking for stupid-humor laughter, this is not the movie for you. This is a romantic comedy that takes awkward situations and makes them laughable, without going too far. Dane Cook is great as well, but Steve C. and Juliette Binoche have amazing chemistry on screen.

Funny Movie

I rated this movie as "Good" because it has some parts that are not important at all and it seems like they were added to make the movie longer. This is a romantic comedy. There is no better actor to play Dan then our favorite 40 year old virgin. This is a good movie to watch two or three times but just seemed like it was longer than it needed to be.
