You Don't Mess With The Zohan (DVD, 2008, Unrated Single Disc Version)

Movie synopsis

Dennis Dugan (BIG DADDY, HAPPY GILMORE) directs this comedy co-written by Adam Sandler, Judd Apatow, and Robert Smigel. Disco- and hummus-loving Zohan (Sandler) is the Israeli army's best weapon. He can single-handedly take out terrorists and swim like a dolphin, and still find time to charm the ladies. But this lethal weapon is tired of fighting Palestinian terrorists like the Phantom (John Turturro). He has bigger dreams: he wants to cut and style hair. Unfortunately, once Zohan arrives in New York City with a new look straight out of the 1980s and an assumed identity after faking his own death, his lack of experience gets him laughed out of salon after salon. Finally, Dalia (Emmanuelle Chriqui), a Palestinian salon owner, gives him a shot, and the older patrons love him. But just as Zohan is hitting his stride, Salim, a Palestinian New York City cabbie (Rob Schneider) recognizes him, and suddenly the Zohan's dream is in jeopardy. To confuse matters more, there is a Trump-like developer (Michael Buffer) who is trying to clear out the Manhattan neighborhood where Israelis and Palestinians peacefully coexist in order to build a mall. A bulked-up Sandler is amusing as Zohan, and this is Schneider's best performance in years. Despite the extreme stereotyping, there is an underlying message about the futility of war and fact that people really are, after all, just people. The film is peppered with brief appearances from a menagerie of celebrities, including Chris Rock, Dave Matthews, Charlotte Rae, Kevin James, John McEnroe, Mariah Carey, George Takei, and Bruce Vilanch. Lainie Kazan and Nick Swardson also star in this film as a mother and son who befriend the new immigrant., Funnymen Robert Smigel, Adam Sandler, and Judd Apatow join forces to pen this comedy about an ex-Israeli soldier. Zohan (Sandler) may be a master with weapons and hand-to-hand combat, but all he really wants to do is cut hair in New York City.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"[A] lot of the crude bodily-function jokes are actually pretty funny, not least because they are supplemented by more hummus-based humor than you might have thought possible."
New York Times - A. O. Scott (06/11/2008)

"[F]unnier than most of the early Sandler vehicles....Sandler deserves credit for trying to mine a serious subject -- the Israeli-Palestinian conflict -- for comic relief."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (06/06/2008)

3 stars out of 5 -- "Be it playing over-the-top Bondian heroics or wooing shop owner Darlia, Sandler mixes sentiment and silliness into an engaging confection."
Empire - Ian Freer (09/01/2008)

3 stars out of 5 -- "Co-written by mirth mogul Judd Apatow, this vehicle flaunts Sandler's most appealingly silly character since HAPPY GILMORE."
Total Film - Richard Matthews (01/01/2009)

Zohan is the most powerful tool the Israel army could ever hope for.He can catch the bad guys in a blink of the eye with as little as a scratch on him or not at all. When Zohan's vacation is cut short and the army flies in to get him, he has decided that is the last straw and wants to fufill his dream... of being a hairdresser! But when everyone laughs at his idea he has the last laugh and fakes his own death by the infamous Phantom, and head to New York.Upon arrival the Zohan changes his appearance in hope of not being recognized by anyone, and heads to Paul Mitchell salon. When being rejected he does everything in his power to convince someone for a job based on no experience.Just as he settles into a job at a salon he is recognized by a Palestinian cab driver! Now the Zohan has a new fight not only to keep his idenity secret but also try help saving this salon from being turned into a freakshow of a super mall, and also a new love interest who is the salan owner.

This is a stupid funny movie, and of course a must for any Adam Sandler fan!Hope this helps you decide. Please click YES at the bottom. :)

Sandler is Back!

Remember the time when you thought Adam Sandler made funny movies? Now he is back.
People say they are more into the Apatow/Rogen school, but Judd Apatow co-wrote this.

It is funny, silly and outrageous. Who would have thought that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict could be funny?

See it! (unless you don't like funny movies)

Uneven, but funny

Created: 03/10/08
Look folks, this is ADAM SANDLER we're talking about here. Yes, this is the same stuff that he was doing ten years ago with "The Waterboy." Yes, this is the same company that brought us "Happy Gilmore" and "Click." And yes, while I have aged a bit since I could appreciate the his silliness, there is still a part of me that enjoys the goofy fun that Adam Sandler likes to put on screen.

So how does the humor compare to previous Sandler features? Well, it's unfocused. Part of the problem is that three writers with different mentalities are writing the script. The silliness comes from Sandler, the raunchy stuff comes from Apatow, and everything else comes from Smigel. Although I found myself laughing at quite a few parts (particularly when the Zohan was on the job as a soldier), there were also a lot of parts where I was thinking to myself "Come on. Another shot of the crotch?" (Or butt, or some other sexual reference) All of these various ingredients have been thrown in together, and the end result is, let's face it, uneven.

This is one of my fav movies thats why I had to have it - The Zohan is an Israeli Counter Terrorist that got tired of the war between Israel and Palestine so he faked his death snuck to America and began a new life as Scrappy Cocoa an 1/2 australian 1/2 tibetan inspirng hair dressor - but when things don't happen the way he planned (working with Paul Mitchell) he gets coersed into working in a palestinian salon and there he becomes the # 1 hairdressor in the city - thats just it in a nutshell - this movie contains sexual - geographical - food humor that will keep you rolling on the floor laughing !!

Probably Sandler's most vulgar character/movie yet

Created: 15/11/08
I purchased this movie because I usually find Adam Sandler's movies funny and good enough to buy and watch, and this one look very funny on the previews, so I bought it. I wish I had not purchased it and instead had rented it. Overall I did not find the movie funny. I did find it a bit disgusting, mainly Zohan rubbing his bulge on all his very old clients and having sex with the same old women. And find it unbelievable that the beautiful woman he falls in love with, his boss at the hair salon he works at, would actually fall for him after she's witnessed his disgusting behavior, knowing he's been having sex with all the old women clients at the salon. Maybe the rated version is less vulgar or disgusting, so I probably should have purchased that one instead of the unrated version.
