Includes liner notes by Derek Taylor and track-by-track annotations by Mark Lewisohn.Audio Remixer: Geoff Emerick.Liner Note Author: Derek Taylor.Recording information: ABC Theatre, Blackpool, Lancashire, England (06/15/1965-02/??/1995); EMI Abbey Road Studios, London, England (06/15/1965-02/??/1995); Kenwood, Weybridge, Surrey, England (06/15/1965-02/??/1995); Nippon Budokan Hall, Tokyo, Japan (06/15/1965-02/??/1995); Shea Stadium, NY (06/15/1965-02/??/1995).Director: George Martin.Introduction by: Derek Taylor.Unknown Contributor Roles: Mark Lewisohn; Alan Rouse.ANTHOLOGY: 2 features the Beatles' working tapes from their most fertile period--the years in which they abandoned touring, retreated into the studio, and recorded some of their most enduring music. This isn't a survey of Beatles hits, but a treasure trove of rough drafts and near misses. An early take of "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" finds John Lennon still working out his vocal phrasing; a run-through of "Got To Get You Into My Life," recorded before the brass section was brought in, has the band trying all sorts of harmonies and an alternate bridge. "Your Mother Should Know," with a marching snare-drum beat, is nearly unrecognizable from the released version, and "Good Morning Good Morning," stripped of the heavy SGT. PEPPER psychedelic makeup, rocks with Stones-like ferocity. There is also lots of clowning around on ANTHOLOGY: 2--most prominently, John and Paul giggling their way through an early vocal take of "And Your Bird Can Sing." But the bulk of ANTHOLOGY: 2 isn't genius at play; it's genius at work. There are three takes of "Strawberry Fields Forever" that see this rock classic evolving from Lennon demo to bare-bones practice arrangement to full-blown production. Also featured are McCartney's solo demos for two of the Beatles' best. To hear him showing the band the chords to "Yesterday," and sitting alone at his piano, still fooling with the words to "Fool On The Hill," is to hear pop history quite literally in the making.

Makes me feel a full range of emotions

I have become a big Beatles fan. I started of as a Rolling Stones fan and this wasn't too big of a jump. I herd from a friend of mine who is a die-hard Beatles fan that this one and the 1st Anthologies had two, as close as you can get to, new songs. This one is "real love". John Lennon always sounds like he is singing out his nose, but this wasn't too bad. This one was a little bit better than "Free as a Bird". But my favorite was "You Know My Name". What were they thinking? Whether they were drunk, high, stoned or whatever, they are very talented to so this with "a little help from my friends". It is hilarous! I played this on a Juke Box in a bar and got the strangest looks! Another good song is "Your Mother Should Know". The drums are awesome in this, and Paul could Sing the phonebook and I would still love it.

The Beatles Anthology 2

Created: 10/08/06
I have been a Beatles fan for almost 9 years now and any Beatles record or CD I can listen to I will. The anthology for me is interesting because it showcases the Beatles as "mere mortals". So often, the perception is The Beatles were almost supernatural. These outtakes demonstrate that although the Fab Four were quite talented, they were certainly capable of making mistakes, which they often did. The new song "Real Love" is very moving and it makes you wonder what would have been if John had not died. These songs cover the time period from 1965-1967. An arguement could be made this was their most creative period. The outtakes and demo of "Strawberry Fields Forever" vividly illustrate how a song goes from start to finish. Though a Beatles fan would definitely enjoy any of the anthologies, even a new fan can find material to they would like on Anthology 2. I have not purchased Anthology 3, but after listening to this set, I am probably going to get it. I give The Beatles Anthology 2 the highest rating possible because I truly believe it is excellent. The Beatles music is timeless and always entertaining whether your 10, 50 or 99. Hopefully, I'll still be listening to them when I'm 64!

Not for the casual fan

Created: 06/02/08
Great stuff for the true fan.I love the acoustic playing in "I'm Looking Through You" It's to bad the bridge was not written at that time.A local radio station a couple of years ago had a day when they played all 3 anthologys back to back.I couldn't figure out why.Anyway,I tuned in when I was in my car,and the song was"Got to Get You Into My Life"A great song, but not on this lp.All that was on was that single note and I thought, how dreadful for someone tuning in and hearing that.I don't think it should have even been on the disc.
"Strawberry Fields Forever" is really great. It starts with John playing in his room with an acoustic guitar.with 3 different parts, you get the real deal of how the song developed.I'm so glad that was on there.

beatles anthology 2

Created: 05/01/09
all 3 Beatles Anthologies offer fascinating insights into the creativity, humor and energy of rock and roll's greatest band. Many of the selections are recordings of Beatles songs in development and show how these songs grew from basic and incomplete ideas into the full pop masterpieces we hear on the albums. Other selections are alternative versions to the familiar numbers, with different instrumentation and soloing. The listener will gain insight into how diferently Paul McCartney and John Lennon were in their approach to song building. Indispensable material to all serious Beatles fans.

awesome early music cd

Created: 03/09/09
A lot of this raw studio music recorded sound as great as the lp or 45's cd's put out for sale to public, what i don't like is to bad there wasn't more material or future songs,i love the different minds, idea's at work here that seem to come fairly easily to the boy's. i love there style and leadership on this early work you can see a band just growing as we all have seen later on down the winding road.i purchased this to add to my collection and what a great buy everything on this cd covers a few years of music.
