Antwone Fisher is a 2002 American drama film directed by Denzel Washington, marking his directorial debut. He also stars in the film as the psychiatrist, Jerome Davenport, alongside Hollywood newcomers Derek Luke, who plays the title role (and personally knew the real Antwone Fisher), and ex-model Joy Bryant, as Fisher's girlfriend.
The film is inspired by a true story, with the real Antwone Fisher credited as the screenwriter, and is based on his autobiographical book Finding Fish. The film was produced by Washington, Nancy Paloian, and Todd Black, and features a soundtrack by Mychael Danna.
Black was first inspired to make the movie upon hearing the story from Fisher, who was then working as a security guard at Sony Pictures Studios.

I bought this because I had seen it before. Excellent movie of a true story of a young mans battle with his anger about being abandoned by his mother. The story shows his search to find his parents and all the hardships and abuse {that instilled this anger in him} he endured in his young life. True story! Excellent interviews with the real Antwone Fisher. The actor that played him and the real Antwone are real life friends. Highly recommended!

Pretty good film about a young black man Antwone Fisher (Derek Luke), who wound up in an orphanage as a baby after being born in prison. His teenage mother was in prison, and his father was dead. She never bothered to claim him when she got out. He was placed in a foster home at two, where grew up in what is described (by him) as an abusive home where he lived until age fourteen. At that time he left and lived a life of crime on the streets, for the next few years. All of this is supposed to be the reason for his violent temper.
He joins the Navy where he gets into trouble for injuring another sailor in a fight. He is sentenced, demoted, and ordered to begin psychiatric treatment for his violent nature. The doctor is Jerome Davenport (Denzel Washington). Treatment goes slowly, and some eventual progress is made. Antwone meets a female sailor, Cheryl, and begins a relationship. While on leave in Mexico, Antwone gets into another fight and is thrown into jail. Now he tells his doctor that as a child he was abused.
Dr. Davenport eventually releases Antwone from treatment, suggesting that he try to locate his mother. Finally finding his father's family, he is able to locate his mother. It seemed to me that she could have cared less that he was her son, but he is able to find some closure. The father's family was receptive to him, and wanted to welcome him as a family member and begin a relationship.
I can't help but think that we have all heard this story too many times before. . ."It wasn't my fault because. . .; I only steal and rob people because. . .; etc."
