    Movie synopsis

The true story of ANTWONE FISHER tracks a remarkable young man on the path to recovery from physical and sexual abuse. Antwone Fisher (Derek Luke) is a young Navy sailor who is on verge of getting booted from the military because of his volatile temper when he is ordered to mandatory sessions with psychiatrist Dr. Jerome Davenport (Denzel Washington). After a few strained sessions, Fisher navigates through difficult memories of his Cleveland childhood, mostly of life with a vicious foster mother (Novella Nelson) who beats him on a regular basis (and refers to him not by name, but by the n-word) and a foster sister who violates him sexually. Fisher and Davenport form a father-son bond (Fisher even adopts the doctor's wife [Salli Richardson] as a kind of surrogate Mom). And eventually he finds the strength to work through his anger and the courage to forge his first romantic relationship with Cheryl (Joy Bryant).Writer Antwone Fisher, making his screenplay debut, achieves an encouraging view of human nature with this story, and first-time director Washington molds it into a film that ranks with GOOD WILL HUNTING and ORDINARY PEOPLE. Washington demonstrates his ease with actors by drumming up rich emotional intimacy, not without naturally humorous and awkward moments. Vivid, painterly images and the yearning melodies of composer Mychael Danna complete the artistry of the film.

    Editorial reviews

"...[Featuring] a vibrant acting debut by Derek Luke....The young actor has great presence on screen....He makes Antwone's stillness, his sweetness and his violence equally believable and compelling..."
Los Angeles Times - Kenneth Turan (12/20/2002)

"...As a director Mr. Washington shows a confident grasp of cinematic narrative in a hearty meat-and-potatoes style. But the most remarkable aspect of his behind-the-camera debut is his brilliantly surefooted handling of actors..."
New York Times - Stephen Holden (12/19/2002)

"...Washington the actor puts in a fine performance. But 28-year-old Luke is the star of the show, striking just the right notes in his understated and uplifting performance..."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (12/20/2002)

"...Truly worthwhile....Washington expertly weaves a matter-of-fact social commentary into an extremely personal story..."
    Premiere - Glenn Kenny (01/01/2003)

"...Intense....Derek Luke's clean, direct performance as Fisher is the real attention-getter..."
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (01/03/2003)

    ...Stately and thought-provoking..."

    Antwone Fisher

    Created: 14/04/09
Antwone Fisher is a 2002 American drama film directed by Denzel Washington, marking his directorial debut. He also stars in the film as the psychiatrist, Jerome Davenport, alongside Hollywood newcomers Derek Luke, who plays the title role (and personally knew the real Antwone Fisher), and ex-model Joy Bryant, as Fisher's girlfriend.

The film is inspired by a true story, with the real Antwone Fisher credited as the screenwriter, and is based on his autobiographical book Finding Fish. The film was produced by Washington, Nancy Paloian, and Todd Black, and features a soundtrack by Mychael Danna.

Black was first inspired to make the movie upon hearing the story from Fisher, who was then working as a security guard at Sony Pictures Studios.

I bought this because I had seen it before. Excellent movie of a true story of a young mans battle with his anger about being abandoned by his mother. The story shows his search to find his parents and all the hardships and abuse {that instilled this anger in him} he endured in his young life. True story! Excellent interviews with the real Antwone Fisher. The actor that played him and the real Antwone are real life friends. Highly recommended!

Pretty good film about a young black man Antwone Fisher (Derek Luke), who wound up in an orphanage as a baby after being born in prison. His teenage mother was in prison, and his father was dead. She never bothered to claim him when she got out. He was placed in a foster home at two, where grew up in what is described (by him) as an abusive home where he lived until age fourteen. At that time he left and lived a life of crime on the streets, for the next few years. All of this is supposed to be the reason for his violent temper.

He joins the Navy where he gets into trouble for injuring another sailor in a fight. He is sentenced, demoted, and ordered to begin psychiatric treatment for his violent nature. The doctor is Jerome Davenport (Denzel Washington). Treatment goes slowly, and some eventual progress is made. Antwone meets a female sailor, Cheryl, and begins a relationship. While on leave in Mexico, Antwone gets into another fight and is thrown into jail. Now he tells his doctor that as a child he was abused.

Dr. Davenport eventually releases Antwone from treatment, suggesting that he try to locate his mother. Finally finding his father's family, he is able to locate his mother. It seemed to me that she could have cared less that he was her son, but he is able to find some closure. The father's family was receptive to him, and wanted to welcome him as a family member and begin a relationship.

I can't help but think that we have all heard this story too many times before. . ."It wasn't my fault because. . .; I only steal and rob people because. . .; etc."
