This is by far the best laptop I have owned. Even though it was made in 2008, this model of Macbook Pro is my favorite because it has the kind of graphics card that works well in Ubuntu and other Linux distributions (NVIDIA, NOT those yucky AMD Radeon or even worse: INTEL graphics that have hit or miss support in Linux), a multi touch GLASS trackpad that is smooth and not abrasive and cheap like in most PC laptops (and it's not a no-button trackpad, either!), and a CPU that is much faster than the Celeron, Atom, or Sempron based units you find in Wal-Mart that run that horrendous Windoze 8 operating system for the price I paid for this machine, $350 including shipping. I had purchased another one of these laptops a few years ago and decided to purchase this one after the first one started acting up, and I am glad to now have a parts laptop to go with this one. If I was asked whether or not I would buy another one of these workhorses, I would answer with a resounding YES!

The only caveats I have about this machine is that the onboard audio card doesn't sound as clean as others I have tried, as it has a lot of background hiss, and the Broadcom wireless card isn't supported out of the box (although getting it to work is a cinch). An Atheros or RALink card would be better.

I bought this as an upgrade from the Samsung Chromebook, the Chrome-only laptop sold by Google and created by Samsung. At the price i paid ($330), I was spending roughly $80 more than I spent on the Chromebook, but the increase in quality is substantial and noteworthy.

The actual laptop is a Macbook Pro prior to the unibody design. It has screws for disassembly everywhere, and it weighs substantially more than the Chromebook (clocking in at nearly three times the weight of it). However, the performance is substantially greater than what is offered by the Chromebook's ARM system on a chip. I can have several tabs open in Chrome, Hangouts, and other programs running in the background with no strain on the MBP. The Chromebook started to cap out at around 8 tabs open and stuttered when playing back HD video.

Because this Mac is a Macbook Pro, it can run the latest version of Mac OS X, Mavericks (10.9), and suffers no problems once upgraded fully. Though it is considerably older than the Chromebook, it still packs a significant punch in the quality department.

The last comparison comes down to battery life. This is likely to vary based on usage patterns (and again, based on the battery depending on how used the laptop was), but the fact of the matter is that it is significantly worse than the Chromebook. However, most times when power is a problem, charging ports are never far away. At 8-10 hours, the Chromebook is only beat by the Macbook Air. And for some people, it might be worth the extra pricetag.

But in 2013 (now going into 2014), this Macbook Pro still packs enough power to perform normal computing tasks and act as a usable replacement for a desktop PC. It isn't the lightest id on the block, but it sure is one of the cheapest and best performing.

I purchased this machine because I needed a working logic board to replace one for a customer. I purchased it for parts and I got what I expected to get. DVD drive is a little flaky, but that's not what I needed anyway. Used RAM to upgrade daughters MacBook, and selling screen to recoup some of expenses. Fair product and well described.

Apple laptops are the best, period. I would highly recommend any Mac for anyone. The learning curve is minimal and the components are innovative.
