At the same time as announcing the new iPad in March 2012, Apple also issued an update to its Apple TV.

It wasn't the full on Apple iTV, the rumoured Apple television that many had hopped for, rather it was a small revision to the existing media streamer of last year, retaining the same form factor but with an updated menu system and faster processor.

The biggest change though is its new ability to stream and play full 1080p HD movies - last year's model could only manage 720p, which was all the iTunes Store offered for movie rentals and purchasing anyway.

Of course, this means that Apple is going to have to update a lot of its iTunes Store catalogue to 1080p for you to get the most out of it, but most new movies were being offered in 1080p when we checked.

As well as enabling you to purchase and rent movies Apple TV does two other things of note - it acts as a browser for selected Internet content (YouTube, Vimeo, Netflix, iCloud, Podcasts, etc) and thanks to Apple's AirPlay system it can receive content streamed from a Mac, PC or iOS device and play it on your television.

I originally owned an Apple TV first gen with the 160 gb hard drive in it. Resolution was 720p. It was pretty good for its time. I see people buying the Apple TV 2 at a higher price because they can jailbreak it. Personally I checked out all those millions of channels and to me 95 percent of it was junk. Yeah Apple has fewer apps BUT, Since I bought my Apple TV 3 I purchased 3 more because of the incredible picture quality and the verity of things it does. Once I logged into the first one, turned on sharing on my computer, itunes and I have iTunes Match, literally everything ever purchased was there. Music, TV shows, Movies, everything. I do like HBO go which I wish was on there and other apps like Max go, etc. I ended up purchasing a ROKU XS because it had the HBO GO app but then I activated AIR PLAY and my AV world opened right up. I have Charter internet at 100MBPS so fast internet, iPad and iPhone. All of those apps I mentioned earlier HBO etc which none of them allowed mirroring earlier now you can use AIR PLAY with them.Perfect! I want to watch Starz Banshee on my iPad, hit airplay which gives me all the apple TVs on my network and instantly a 1080p audio video of Banshee on my 47 inch LG tv. I have a TIVO premier, (actually 3 of them. Between the TIVO, Apple TV and iPad. My Onkyo TX NR 809 and Jamo BX 200 vintage speakers, 2 Jamo 360 subs, I have (for me) just the best home theater and I would lose half of it were I not have my Apple TV 3. And the cost! Its stupid not to have a few provided you have the internet with good bandwidth!I have 3 AVR's in 3 different locations and with airplay on with each of them, play a playlist on my computer and VIOLA! Music everywhere! Incredible, How did I live all these years with out this! If you don't have an apple TV 3, skip the 2, not worth it and buy a few 3's YOu wont be sorry!

Apple TV is currently on its third generation and has matured with age. Its primary goal is to give you access to the content you have bought on iTunes, or to stream your additional movie, TV and music files from a PC or Mac running Apple's software.

You can purchase or rent iTunes content straight through the small box, so don't technically have to have another Apple device. However, with Apple AirPlay meaning it can mirror and stream content to a large screen from your iPhone or iPad, it would seem unlikely that you wouldn't have one of those too.

Like many Apple products, Apple TV is a doddle to set up and use. It is presented in a straight forward, clean way, with bold apps and a very Apple-centric style.

Unlike many of its rivals, much of the content available through the box - specifically the iTunes movies and shows - offer trailers and previews in 1080p, so you can check to see whether you fancy something before paying for it.

Apple AirPlay mirroring is essential too, as the lack of app support for major UK services, such as BBC iPlayer, ITV Player and 4oD, can be compensated through using an iPhone or iPad to stream them to the box.

It is also capable of 1080p output and much of the content is presented as such. And iCloud support means you can view all of the pictures stored in your Photo Stream.

Although there are several third party apps, they are not as varied as on many rivals and often seem US-centric in nature.

In all other respects, Apple TV is locked to Apple's ecosystem and therefore suffers from the same problems or benefits as the company's other devices, depending on your point of view.

New apps seem to be added once in a blue moon, and there isn't the versatility exhibited on rival boxes. Apple also restricts application user interfaces to ape its own, so although Netflix has profiles and the same functionality as on other devices, it isn't presented the same and can be confusing and awkward to use in comparison.

It is easy to recommend Apple TV to owners of iPhones, iPod touches and iPads, less so to everybody else. If iTunes is your life, you should consider an Apple TV even if you already own a smart TV.

Its simplicity in use and quality of output is superb, but do be aware that AirPlay streaming BBC iPlayer, for example, gives you a less than HD version of that particular service as it is dependant on the iOS app, which was not designed with TV use as its primary concern.

You also cannot AirPlay Sky apps - Sky Go and Now TV - from an iPad or iPhone, so if you subscribe to either of those services, you need to look elsewhere (in fact, for Sky Go, only the Xbox 360 has support outside of mobile devices). You can access Now TV's sports coverage at a daily rate, but not the entertainment channels or movies.

Apple TV is great for use in either home or office. You can not only do nearly everything you can do on iTunes on the Apple TV, but you can AirPlay from any Apple device. Airplay is what I most use Apple TV for. Airplay is the ability to play or view any music, video, photo and even what is on your screen wirelessly through WiFi or Ethernet to the Apple TV from your Apple device. It provides 1080p full HD HDMI output and Dolby Digital sound quality. Rather a slideshow or PowerPoint presentation for work or just music and movies as I do, it's a great product. You can also choose from a variety of apps like PBS, ABC and HBO and many more to stream on demand directly from the Apple TV!

This was my first time using a device like this. It works perfectly for the purposes in which we use it for. So far, I've tested it out with netflix directly on the atv, and ipadmini/iphone/ipod mirroring has been working perfectly, better than i expected. I was worried there would be lag with the audio/video portion when playing back videos, but it seemed perfect.

Physical aspects: this box is tiny and sleek. Unfortunately the HDMI cable I connect to it is very large, so my current setup looks weird, but apple didn't fail on making this device classy.

I would have prefered if it came with a nice tangle free style HDMI cable (instead of no HDMI cable) similar to the tangle free style power cable it comes with. I was surprised to even see that type of power cable as I've only seen the thin tangle free cables in headphones before.
