    CNET Editors' review

    • THE GOOD

The third-generation iPod Nano offers crisp, bright video playback, an exceptionally thin all-metal body, above-average battery life, built-in games, and an advanced user interface.

    • THE BAD

We're not crazy about the wider body, the smaller scroll wheel, the lack of video output, and the average-sounding audio quality.

The shape may have changed, but Apple's relentless attention to detail remains. The third generation of the iPod Nano provides loads of entertainment for a down-to-earth price.

device with a good library and ultra sharp and thin to handle!!

iPod nano is the small iPod with one very big idea: Video. The world's popular music player lets you enjoy TV shows, movies, video podcasts, and more. The larger, brighter display means amazing picture quality. It features an anodized aluminum top and polished stainless steel back. It'll wow you for hours. Play up to 5 hours of video or up to 24 hours of audio on a single charge. iTunes provides music, movies, TV shows, games and more. All those features within a wafer-thin, 6.5-mm profile makes iPod nano a tiny big attraction you'll just love carrying around!

3rd Generation Nano is a perfect evolution

    Created: 15/09/07
The 3rd generation Nano, Available in capacities of 4, and 8GB (priced at $149 & $199 respectively) these have a scratch-resistant aluminum front, steel back (i recommend a cover to protect the back), rounded edges, and various colors, though the colors are only available in the 8GB models. You can get a 4GB Nano, though it only comes in Silver.

The 3rd Generation Nano has completely redesigned the Nano, and it feels like it is different on the sides when you hold it comparatively to the older generations. This design also makes it feel a lot thinner than it was, which is hard to believe, though it is only millimeters thinner. The screen has changed too, having a 2-inch viewing area, which makes it very easy to use, browse and watch. This new Nano now has a longer battery life. Apple claims that it will last 30 hours, but I was able to get just over 32 hours of playtime – which is nice… real nice.

The 3rd generation Nano comes with similar features as the previous version such as Volume Limit, Stopwatch, Screen Lock, and support for the Nike + iPod Sport Kit, but now has a wide variety of features, previously not found in the previous generations.

The new music search functions, the brighter screen (65% brighter than the 2nd generation), improved sound quality, coverflow, and added games give the new iPod added flare. The biggest difference in the 3rd generation of the iPod Nano is the new body style and the video capability additions.

The body style has changed from the “stick of gum” shape, to the internet given nickname “fatty”. The wider iPod allows for a larger, 2.0 inch screen that allows for a larger viewing area for games, albums, but more importantly - video. Yes, the new Nano allows a “little video for everyone”.

The video quality is sharp and crisp, and allows the user to watch TV shows with little strain, however, watching movies can strain the viewer (due to the length). This flash based memory player, and its storage size (4/8GB) allow for thinness, but if you put a couple of full length movies on your player, your space will fill up quickly. This is the one downside I have with this – hopefully there will be larger space selections in the future.

Also, the bottom of this unit has changed slightly. The headphone jack, the hold switch and the sync port are at the bottom, with the sync port directly in the middle. This allows for ease of use to transfer data.

s a fan small MP3 players, and of the past Nano line-ups, I love this design. I really do. I think the aluminum casing is the way to go, it is too bad it is not all the way around the unit. Should you replace your old 8GB Nano (2nd Generation) with the new one? If you really want video, coverflow, and games, I would say yes. Regardless if you upgrade, or decided to wait it out, I highly recommended this device to Apple lovers and new MP3 enthusiasts alike.

    -Brighter, crisper viewing screen
    -Better sound
    -Video capable
    -Aluminum scratch-resistant casing on front
    -Concave select button
-Amazing battery-life: 30 hours plus (5 with video)!
-Search features, cover flow, album art
    -New colors to choose from
-Games for download via iTunes (3 are on the unit already)

-Still no built in FM tuner
-Limited space when it comes to video
-Sync port, hold switch, and headphone jack all on the same side"

    Resistance is futile...

    Created: 28/09/07
Review For: Apple iPod nano 3rd Generation Special Edition Red (8 GB)
I work at a cd store and have resisted the ipod for a long long time. There is something about getting a cd, opening it and looking at the artwork that I love, so I was never into it. Until now. I saw the commercial while hanging out with some friends at the local bar, and decided to take a look, and I instantly fell in love. Now, like I said, I work at a cd store, so I couldn't really afford the price tag, but my girlfriend surprised me with one and I haven't left the house without it. I wear it while at my other job, even with video going, for background noise. Today I was sanding and filling and listening to emporer's new groove, and it helped me focus. I think you can tell I'm not the usual Apple customer. For specs, lookat the other reviews, but for personal insight, this is why I so desired the 3rd gen nano product red:

I travel quite a bit. The battery lasts long enough for a plane ride, or a road trip to L.A. on the 405 in traffic.

My girlfriend doesn't have a lot of CDs in her car and now I don't have to lug around a cd book.

I can have an entire season of robot chicken ON THE GO...

I can listen to something while working without the burden of a personal cd player and without torturing co-workers/classmates with my eclectic taste and ADD when it comes to music.

From about a foot and a half away, the screen is about the same size as looking at my tv at the end of the bed.

It's small and light. I smoke. I have a cell phone. Carrying an ipod classic would just be more stuff in my pockets.

The casing. Aluminum instead of plastic. I want it to stay nice.

Seamless case. I also work at a model shop, so sanding and dust don't get into it.

    Super clear picture.

Storage. I'm not looking to upload an entire media archive of all I have aquired. I just want to have enough to get along while I'm not at home. I have 21 episodes of robot chicken, emperor's new groove, 561 songs and a mini portfolio of my artwork on it and still have 2 Gbs left. All in one lil' package. This is great, especially for art students.

And I'm hard on things. I think this was a way smarter choice than getting an ipod touch.

As for the decision of getting the product red one? Well, in all honesty, I think the black is the coolest LOOKING, BUT if I am to succumb to mainstream consumerism, somebody might as well be helped out by it! At least a few bucks go to help fight AIDs in Africa. It's not the bright red like the last generatiion (which I would have loved) but a more toned down almost maroonish red. But I love it. If it was stolen, I'd either hunt them down, or go get another one STAT.

    Hope that helps.

    Apple Ipod Nano Video

    Created: 02/04/08
If someone is looking for a small storage unit, that plays music, stores your photos, plays music videos, plays both video and audio podcasts, and will play movies, this is the way to go. It is light and easy to transport, ( howerver, as with all portable electronics, I recomend a case to protect the unit.)
Of all the portable electronics that I own, this one gets the most air time, falling one small step behind the Apple Ipod Video Classic that I have. The Nano is small enough that I can wear it around my neck, ( with the right case, ) and easily use it in the car without disturbing other motorists, pedestrians, or residents in the area, while not being subjected to the tyrany of local radio stations. It is also great when I am shopping for groceries, taking a walk, or at the gym. However, if one were to use the Nano while jogging, I would recommend the arm band, like most electronics, I wouldn't want for it to be bounced around too much.
I have a Sony PSP, this recieved alot of air time prior to getting my Ipods. Although I love the huge LCD screen that Sony PSP offers, bottom line, PSP is good for playing games, and watching videos while sitting. It is way to large and fragile to use at the gym, and there is no way that I am going to use it while shopping, or taking a walk.
A few things that Sony's PSP offers that Apple Ipod Nano doesn't. With PSP, storing photos, and home videos is much easier, they all go on the card which can be removed. The memory expansion slot means alot to we consumers. Also, PSP can access wireless hotspots, Nano cannot. One can play most Sony games that they can afford on UMD, as well as watch any video on UMD. Nano offers limited games, however, most videos that one can download, and convert will play on the Nano, even home videos. ( If you want to drive your friends and family nuts! ) Something that some folks will miss with the PSP, is that huge, very visable screen. The screen on Nano is well lit, but very small, concerning videos.
Is the Nano worth the price? I got a deal. However, seeing how much this little machine can deliver, I would say yes, go out and get one and you will see why. The Apple Ipod Nano is well made, ultra portable, plays music and videos, has photo storage, plays podcasts, and, ( unlike the Apple Ipod Video Classic, ) has a split screen that offers what is called a cover flow. The cover flow shows the CD, DVD, and podcast covers, as well as your photos on the right side of the screen while the menu is on the left side. Very sightly addition to the Ipod.
One last thing, the video quality on the Nano is exellent. It is not like some of the smaller devices that have, what looks like a great LCD screen, until you turn it on and try to watch a video, and it looks like a moving version of connect the dots, ( or, in this case pixels. ) Although the screen is very small, the quality is fantastic!
Keep in mind, even if one does not have a lifestyle of going and going, there are always checkout lines, where people are horribly subjected to tabloids, and evil mass media, not to mention waiting. This is where the Nano realy comes in handy. Now I am no longer subjected to horrible programing in public places where I have to wait, or the horrible tabloids, because I have podcasts. Even with everything Nano offers, this would be the final decision maker! Do you want to be subjected to all of that negativity?
