Bernina 830 Sewing Machine

Despite being manufactured thirty some odd years ago, the mechanical Bernina 830 Record Sewing machine is extremely popular! So popular that Bernina just RE-USED THE NAME on a NEW COMPUTERIZED sewing machine, creating a great deal of confusion, because Ebay has the description of the new computerized version, with the photo of the mechanical version. Any information about a larger bobbin, and computerized stuff, is referring to the new 830, not the wonderful metal mechanical 830 which I am reviewing here today.

22 stitches, plus a built in buttonholer!

Decorative Embroidery stitches

Utility Stretch stitches for spandex

non jamming bobbin

2 speeds located on power switch- low speed for embroidery and detail work, high speed when you have to hurry!

Automatic tension, so you can sew with a wide variety of thread thicknesses, without having to constantly adjust the tension. Topstitching with heavy thread? No problem, just thread it like usual, and it sews perfectly, with no tension adjustment needed! Saves MAJOR headaches!

Free arm- darn socks, sew sleeves hems round seams easier!

Extension table to make sewing large projects easier

Instruction manual teaches you how to sew like an expert!

Multiple needle positions make top stitching and seam placement easier, even with any presser foot

Heavy duty household NOT industrial

Turn a knob to raise or lower feed dogs

Knee lift bar for raising and lowering presser foot hands free- Quilters love it!

Two needle sewing capability

Specialty presser feet make all sewing jobs fast easy!

Handy organized red carrying case makes it portable for sewing classes

Accessory case (red) keeps presser feet and accessories neatly in carrying case

Walking foot available, a favorite for quilters!

BSR also available optional for smoother freehand embroidery stitching!

Anyone tells you the old Bernina's aren't worth buying, because parts are not available to repair them, are either trying to buy your Bernina cheap, or they simply don't know what they are talking about. First, they don't break easily, or often, second, there are millions of these sewing machines, and while some parts are a little harder to find than others, but there are millions of these machines around the world, some of which become part machines, providing donor parts to keep your machine running! Don't give up on the best mechanical sewing machines, just because someone wants to scare you into buying new machines for high prices!

It is nearly all metal, with only two nylon or plastic type gears- one is the main drive gear, and the other is the gear which engages the stack of metal cams that create all of the different stitches. Apparently only the 700 and 800 series had these gears made of a weaker material than was used in the 500, 600 and 900 series. Some people insist it was so buyers would take them into the Bernina shop to be repaired, and they would be talked into trading them in, and buying the newest more expensive model, but despite the weak gears, these machines are KEEPERS! They are absolutely worth the time and money to repair and maintain them, they would literally last for centuries if they are properly cared for. The high quality stitching, wide variety of stitching adjustments and applications would never have gone out of fashion were it not for the computerization of sewing machines.

Disappointed Bernina customer

I bought the Bernina Series 8 830 model in April. Bernina's description of all its features as top of the line was what sold me. It's a very large, heavy machine that does allow sewing and embroidering larger items. It uses bobbins with greater capacity than other Bernina machines (more expensive also). In my opinion it is not worth the investment. It's overpriced with more negatives than positives. The needle threading system doesn't work more often than it does work. The bobbin winder is temperamental. Threading the bobbin for embroidery is a headache. You get FALSE error messages. After very little use, mine has to go in for a technician to replace a piece that FELL off. The machine locked up with thread caught in the hook system. Bernina support couldn't/wouldn't tell me how I could replace the part that fell off after tediously removing the thread with tweezers. I followed the on screen message for removing the thread exactly. I also didn't get an answer from Bernina support as to what caused it so I wouldn't have the same problem in the future. After getting this fixed I wonder what else will go wrong. This is my 4th Bernina machine. I loved the other 3 and didn't have problems with them. My advice is to spend less and get a lower end model that performs well.

37yr old Bernina 830 ... bet it lasts another 37+ years!

This is an amAzing workhorse of a machine. I had just sold my Bernina 807 (which I bought in 1975 and wanted the 830) so that I could purchase this Bernina 830. In 1975 when I bought my first Bernina, I did a lot of research and test-driving re other machines.

It has every bit as much power as it did when new (as did my 807, which came with a 40-year guarantee). It runs smoothly & surely, with good tension still intact as well. There are 20 specialty stitches which can be used for any number of creative applications.

This sewing machine is a definite go-to appliance if you are looking for everlasting quality but refuse to pay $1,000-$10,000 for the new sewing machines on the market. Plus, I much prefer a machine that is NOT electronic so that one can troubleshoot themselves if necessary. Also, the manual is free online at the Bernina website.

So get on eBay ... buy this machine!! You won't be sorry for even one moment.

Best Sewing Machine Ever Made!

 | Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I bought the Bernina 830 because I bought a new one in the 1970's and it was destroyed in the 1990's when my house was broken into. I have owned 3 sewing machines since and none of them are as good a sewing machine as my old 830. So when this one showed up at a reasonable price on ebay I bought it. It runs like a Swiss watch. Everything works exactly as intended and the machine is extremely rugged. It actually has quite a few decorative stitches and does more that just a basic machine that it is advertised as. For several years I was determined not to buy the old 830 because it's too hard to get parts and the motor can't last forever, but I finally gave in and am glad that I did. It's worth it no matter how long it lasts. They simply do not make them like this anymore.

top of the line when it comes to vintage machines & would not trade for new

this is it! the one of all the ones, as my youngest would say. really no need for anything else as far as tailoring, finishing, using your skills-even if you have none. a true beauty & the one I discovered was in perfect condition. an honest ebay seller who stands behind her machines. one very lucky choice. actually, was going to add a serger-this well suited for athletic clothing, as is. way back then-the 70's in ski country of Switzerland...this machine made many adorable/useful snow worth outfits & swimwear, too. so, why not now? I did invest in an inexpensive no differential Bernina serger. will review once I get some time on it. this, however, number one in my book against all others. 2nd choice would be the Bernina 1008, available new & similar in mechanical nature.
