Better Than Chocolate (DVD, 1999)

"Better Than Chocolate" is a scrumptious lesbian love story.

When going home from a lesbian club "Cat's Ass," Maggie is overwhelmed by a gang of violent skinheads. Luckily a minibus comes to a screeching halt and Kim quickly jumps out. The skinheads, too cowardly to be violent amongst witnesses as bullies are, instantly move away. Maggie thanks Kim, who watches over Maggie as she leaves. That's how they meet.

Maggie dropped out of law school and works in a women's shop. To avoid a conflict with her controlling mother, Maggie concocts a success story, telling Mom she's living in a hi brow apartment. Since Mom is marital problems with her second husband, she takes her young son and temporarily comes to live with Maggie. Fortunately, Maggie is housesitting an apartment belonging to a woman performer who's on tour.

Maggie and Kims paths cross again. This time, at the new apartment, they make love in the shower. Maggie's mom and little brother walk in. Interesting dialogue issues. At the 1999 Berlin Film Festival "Better than Chocolate" was screened.

It is a steamy sensuous film that treats the subject of lesbianism with the kind of dignity it deserves~

This is a romantic comedy first and foremost. The main characters are accessable and familiar. One can not help but want them to triumph over the adversities which cross their paths.

I first saw this film on TV (satelite) though I have no idea which network it was that had the wisdom to run it. I had to get a copy of it for myself and figured that a DVD version which included a Directors Commentary would be preferable to a copy on VHS.

The soundtrack for this film is chock full of great music from artists which most people will never hear on commecial radio stations.

If you are a fan of romantic comedy; this film is a must-see.

I love this movie, it is one of the few lesbian romances where we are not mocked or turned into some male fantasy. it is true to what we feel for eachother!!! We don't get to see very many love stories where the focus is a homosexual couple, and even fewer that truely display what we are like, and that we can love eachother the same as straight couples. There needs to be more movies like this one.

better than chocolate is a fantastic lesbian love story. It shows lesbian love, and transgender love, and bisexual love, and straight love. it covers all the sides of the spectrum. the movie shows two happy lesbians falling in love, breaking up, and comming back together.

I love this movie. Its such a classic lesbin movie. This movie is ALOT better than chocolate! =) This movie made it into my Lesbian Movie Collection. Its a must buy or a must see movie.
