CNET Editors' review

Good
  • THE GOOD

RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook is a fast, powerful 7-inch tablet with HDMI output, advanced multitasking and security, and a browser that integrates Adobe Flash 10.2 for a desktop-style Web experience.

  • THE BAD

The 7-inch screen cramps the powerful browser; the wake button is difficult to push; and app selection trails the competition.

  • THE BOTTOM LINE

The BlackBerry PlayBook ably showcases RIM's powerful new mobile operating system, but its middling size diminishes many of its best features.

Review For: BlackBerry PlayBook 16GB, Wi-Fi, 7in - Black
I am giving this unit a 3 star rating because it lacks many important aspects, not even mentioning the ones we are waiting for.

The unit itself is very nice and built with elegance and solidity. It is one of the few tablets out there which can easily multitask and it shows

However, the negative aspects come into play straight away
- No usb ports
- no card slots (you are limited to what you BB has)
-Lots of bridging errors even with your pc
-No skype, no netflix, no hulu, to name a few
-Very limited Blackberry applications and a lot of the popular one missing.
-Initial start up problems(first boot is a painful experience to set up with lots of Wifi errors and you cannot go forward without this.

Add to that the fact that these units despite their incredible price have still sold badly over the holidays, one must not forget that they come from Rim which is underfire and has lost 70 % of its value over the past year. Bottom line, Blackberry is going under and hence they are selling these units for practical cost price.

At this stage if Rim goes bust which is more likely at this point, there will be no updates for this unit which is very important for its survival in this ever so evolving Tablet world.

What will you do if you cannot get skype or android applications on it? What about support in the future?

If you want a tablet just to mess around and certainly are not interested to explore all avenues, having it as a daily companion with you, then get this unit. But the lack of memory addition through an SD slot will be an important factor to consider for your ever growing media and application storage.

At the end of the day, the Playbook book is fun, interesting and charming but very limited and has annoying reoccuring update and connection problems that affect a pleasurable experience.
