Unfortunately, like the last 3 exact lenses I bought from eBay, it was a burn purchase. I expected it because these lenses are well known to have fungus and functional problems, usually because someone has attempted to repair or clean it themselves without any prior training or education.

To any buyer, BEWARE of listings that dawn "untested", "estate sale find", "internal dust" even if it is listed as "USED" and not "NOT WORKING/FOR PARTS", "NO RETURNS" or that can not produce clear photos of internal glass. Even from a topical inspection, there may be a MONSTER beneath the mount.

There is little to no protection if you buy this lens, as eBay does not require a proper inspection and functionality test requirement to list these discontinued lenses as "USED". Any one can happen upon one at a garage sale, list it on eBay as USED even though they have no idea what it does or if it even works properly, turning a huge profit.

This one, like the last, showed fungus and cleaning scratches (barely visible to the untrained eye). Upon disassembly found the electronic MAIN FLEX strip to be severed along with motor control flex strip. It is unrepairable without replacement parts, but as this lens has been out of production for some 20 yrs, is near impossible. Even if parts are found, they are rare, used and entirely too expensive.

Someone attempted repair and had no training. This lens, along with ALL lenses this age, require very articulate use of a soldering iron and knowledge of circuit placement and fusion to properly repair, clean and maintain functionality. One slip turns it into a nice, neat paperweight.

If you find a perfectly functioning unit, congrats! You have a beautiful lens that is a part of Canon history! If you bought a burn unit, e-mail me here and I may be able to help.

Great lens - hard to get in Australia as it's an old production line, but an extremely good quality lens. Hard to find the equivalent in the new digital lenses now days. Good to get a hold of and keep on hand for those special shots, as not a lot of camera buffs in the shops now days can tell you what is the equivalent in the digital conversions now days. Would highly recommend for those that have come from a film SLR to a digital SLR, as it's quality is so far unsurpassed amongst our digital lenses we have for our current Canon digital SLR. A great lens worth looking after.

I shoot weddings and needed a long zoom for ceremonies, but didn't have the budget for a $2000+ L series lens. This cheap alternative provided decent results for less than 1/10th of the price. It takes some getting used to, but once mastered it does its job well.

Remember to always use a tripod or monopod, as it lacks a stabilizer handheld shots will be nearly useless.

For reference I shoot video with a Canon 5D MKII.

Excellent backup lens for my L 70-200. I can take this rock climbing or kayaking knowing I can get great images for less than 1/15th the cost. i have always been a fan of constant aperture when I might need to use fill flash.

I really enjoyed this lens, I can now get good depth of field that I am always curious about when I had my 18-55mm lens kit. When you are a newbie in photography you wouldn't have an understanding of depth of field better until you purchase higher lens that you can experiment on. So I am much very thankful and satisfied having this. Looking forward to have more lenses!
