Product Features
  • 18 MP CMOS sensor
Ideal for those who want to create large, poster-size prints - or crop images without losing any of the detail necessary for printing - EOS 550D's 18MP CMOS sensor is outstanding in low light, and produces images with incredibly low noise.
  • DIGIC 4
Canon's DIGIC 4 processor works with the CMOS sensor to deliver 14-bit image processing, for smooth gradations and natural looking colors. DIGIC 4 also powers advanced Noise Reduction when shooting at higher ISO speeds, plus split-second start-up times and near-instant image review after shooting.
  • High ISO for low light
When light levels fall, the EOS 550D offers an ISO range of up to 6400 - expandable to 12800 for those environments where using flash is undesirable.
  • Full HD movie recording
The EOS 550D combines exceptional still shooting with the ability to shoot Full HD (1080p) video. To satisfy your creativity the EOS 550D features full manual control and selectable frame rates. You can also shoot high speed 50/60fps movies at 720P for when the action is really fast. An HDMI connection allows High Definition playback of footage and images on any HDTV. Also with compatible TVs playback can be controlled using the TV's remote control.
  • 7.7cm (3.0") 3:2 Clear View LCD
Detailed checks on images and video are possible with a 7.7cm (3.0") 3:2 Clear View LCD screen, which features an ultra-high 1,040,000 dots for increased clarity. Switch to Live View mode and use the real-time visual feed to shoot from awkward angles.
  • iFCL metering system
A 63-zone dual layer metering sensor analyzes focus, color and luminance information, providing accurate and consistent metering.
  • Quick Control screen
Accessible using a dedicated button it provides easy access to commonly used functions, ensuring that you are ready to take the shot as it happens.
  • External microphone socket
Add an additional microphone for better quality sound using the 3.5mm stereo jack socket.
  • Movie crop
Shoot VGA movies with an effective zoom of 7x. Movie crop uses only the center part of the sensor and allows long distance shooting without having to change lenses.
  • Create a shooting system as unique as you are
The EOS 550D is compatible with Canon's full range of EF and EF-S lenses and EX-series Speedlites.

---- i used my friend's rebel t2i before i actually bought a slr camera. before i used point n shoot camera for photography class, but point n shoot has a limit of slow shutter speed, so when i first used the t2i, i found it a really good camera for slr beginners.

---- i also recommend you to go for CANON instead of NIKON if you like to take pictures of everyday life stuff and closed-up, well-focused objects. NIKON is only suitable for telephoto photos, which means you enjoy taking pictures of overall views in nature, but again, not macro photos. i tried both brands by myself and came to a conclusion:

-------NIKON: cheaper, brighter and more detailed for indoors and under home lights. but if you bring it outdoor under sunlight, pictures are darker and not as natural as canon

-------CANON: great activity pictures under sunlight, good photo focus, but photos taken from high above like when you sit in an airplane, its stabilization doesn't work very well. photos look shaking because the camera cannot find anything to focus on. besides that, if you stand still to take pictures of stable, not moving views or scenery, it's almost the same as NIKON

---- someone told me to go for T3 to minimize the price to under 500, but its shutter speed is quite slower, you can tell the difference by just listening. and when compared to T3i, they're just the same, except for the 360 degree screen, but i have to add 100 more bucks. so i decided to stick with t2i

---- anyway, this is a nice camera to have. it's suitable for people who enjoy taking fashion shots, or simply enjoy editing everyday pictures of themselves and uploading to the internet. it's also a great camera for slr beginners at a moderate price

As my first SLR camera, I have no way of comparing it to another SLR, but with my last camera (which was a point & shoot). This camera was advertised as a beginner's SLR; easy to use, and easy to learn.

Pros:
--18 megapixels!!!
--Shoots in JPG and RAW modes
--HD recording capability
--Easy to learn and understand
--Great software included in the box
--Light and very comfortable in the hand
--Its a DSLR (so it's expandable by getting more lenses)
--GREAT battery life!

Cons
--Only can record for 30 minutes (but its camera first, not a camcorder, so is not much of a con)
--Weak microphone (when recording)

Being a Nikon User for quite some time (using a D70s and D80), I bought the Canon Rebel T2i (550D) over the Nikon D90 for some for several reasons:

1. It has 18 mega pixels. The same CMOS censor and metering system found in much expesnive model, the Canon 7D (compered to Nikon's D90 14.2 mega pixel CMOS sensor)
2. 1080p HD video at 30 frames per seconds and 720p at 60 frames per second. (as of the D90 only has 720p)
3. External 1/8 stereo mic inputs (in which the Nikon has no external mic options)
4. Wide range of Canon L and EF lense that are compatable to this DSLR.

Yes, I know the Nikon D5100/D7000 has a similar specs as of the Canon T2i but it's CMOS sensor is only 16 megapixels, plus you will find that the Canons T2i affordable price range is easier to your wallet than the D5100 kit.

And since the T2i is a entry level DSLR, I find it alot more fun and easy to use than my Nikon D80 when it comes to taking picture, but my main reason of purchasing this is the awsome HD video you can get with this little DSLR.

I love this camera, I have an old SLR camera and it's about time i upgraded to a DSLR and this is the camera of my choice, its user friendly, quality is really good (for starters it is awesome) and price is good. I always believe in CANON cameras they have been with my friends and family for years and they have very good and very fair price. Thank you CANON!!!

I won't be able to write a professional opinion because it is my first photo camera that i use for video. This camera meets the expectations, works great and i didn´t use full yet. Just did a couple test videos and the results was excellent. I think it's essential to have some kind of stabilizer. It is not the same as handling a video camera. Sometimes I notice that the image has a kind of flicker when moving, when light change. Perhaps this is the configuration I'm using.
