Album Notes
Recorded between 1978 & 1985. Includes liner notes by Gerri Miller.Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Robert Vosgien (Capitol Mastering). This is part of Capitol's Classic Masters series. The April Wine entry in Capitol Records' midline-priced Classic Masters series is a reasonable best-of culled from the group's tenure at Capitol from the late '70s to the mid-'80s. It includes all six of the band's U.S. singles chart entries between 1979 and 1984, "Roller," "I Like to Rock," "Just Between You and Me," "Sign of the Gypsy Queen," "Enough Is Enough," and "This Could Be the Right One." (Of course, the 1972 Top 40 hit "You Could Have Been a Lady," released in the U.S. on Big Tree Records, is not included, nor are any of April Wine's pre- or post-Capitol recordings.) The collection is weakened by the compiler's decision to fill out the rest of the disc by including tracks from all six of the Capitol studio albums, even the commercially negligible contractual-obligation LP Walking Through Fire, and to balance the choices among them; there are only two selections from million-selling masterwork The Nature of the Beast, for instance. Further weakening the set is the decision to use songs that happen to have been released as singles, such as "Get Ready for Love" and "Tonite," even though they had no chart action, in place of album tracks like "All Over Town" and "If You See Kay" that enjoyed measurable AOR radio play. Covers of the Beatles' "Tell Me Why" and King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man" indicate the group's influences even if they are not among its finer moments. But maybe this just means that Classic Masters is a representative survey of April Wine's Capitol period, rather than a presentation of all the highlights. The 24-bit digitally remastered sound is excellent, and the price is attractive, so the album can be recommended to fans of '70s and '80s hard rock who may have missed this band during its heyday. ~ William Ruhlmann

April Wine's Classic Masters

Created: 04/06/07
There is nothing "masterful" about this album. It's a bad attempt at putting together some of their best songs on one disc but fails miserably. Probably a sales ploy dreamed up by some industry stiff. These songs are culled from about 5 different albums but don't hold together in a cohesive whole and end up seeming mismatched and forced. And several great songs are left off. I would recommend you just spend a couple extra bucks and pick up the original albums (on disc) namely: First Glance, Harder...Faster, and Nature of the Beast. These are the seminal rock "Classics" of the late 70's early 80's that have all their BEST songs and then some! There is no way a greatest hits record could ever begin to capture all the greatness of these 3 records. Each album is fantastic on it's own, all the way through. These aren't "one big hit with 30 minutes of filler" type records, these records hold together all the way through and just seem to rock harder (and faster) as they go on. April Wine were such an overlooked band it's hard to believe they didn't gain more popularity back in the day. These records hold up to any of the A-list bands of the time...such as Queen, Van Halen, Aerosmith, Judas Priest, I could go on but I won't. Perhaps they were overshadowed by other musical movements of the time such as the rise of New Wave. Maybe if they would have made these records 2 or 3 years earlier they would have hit their peak just at the right time and created more of a noise. For what ever reason, this band didn't see the same radio play or album promotion that other bands did and that is a crime, because the song writing and album production on these records is top notch and sounds even better remastered in the digital age. Other than the over compressed drum sound (what are you gonna do?) of the time, these songs still sound original and fresh today. There are other "best of" collections of April Wine out there that may have a wider overview of songs than this one does, but trust your true feelings, check out Harder...Faster at full volume, doing 20 miles an hour over the speed limit and tell me that album doesn't ROCK.

April Wine - Classic Masters

I like this April Wine Classic Masters CD because it combines the Greatest Hits of one of my favorite bands when I was a teenager. I love music from the 70's and 80's!

I decided to buy this CD because I love April Wine's music, the price offered on ebay was within my budget, and this particular CD was difficult to find in a retail store.

Thank you.

Great music from the past that brings back memories! Every song on this CD Rocks! Every other song got airplay on the radio. This is one very talented band. Great "album" rock.

Regardless of your age, if you enjoy rock-n-roll....you will love this CD.
