Movie synopsis

To say that Christopher Nolan's THE DARK KNIGHT is the best comic book adaptation does the film a bit of a disservice. It may be a Batman film, but this isn't a kid-friendly action movie full of the bams and pows of the original series. This is a pitch-black thriller with enough drama and tragedy to please even William Shakespeare, but it will certainly keep both comics fans and uninitiated audiences equally happy. THE DARK KNIGHT starts in the wake of BATMAN BEGINS: with the appearance of Batman (Christian Bale), Gotham City's criminal underworld is unnerved. They're also plagued by the new D.A., Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), who, in his quest for justice, remains above the city's corruption. Enter a new villain, the Joker (Heath Ledger), who wants to unite the criminals for a common purpose: to kill Batman.THE DARK KNIGHT is one of the most hyped movies to date, and a lesser film would be crushed under the weight of all that expectation. Some of the publicity stems from the early death of Ledger, who turns in an excellent performance. He provides moments of humor, but this Joker is terrifying, sharing more with classic villains such as Hannibal Lechter than with his comic book predecessors. Eckhart is equally good as Dent, and Maggie Gyllenhaal deserves praise for taking over the role of Rachel Dawes from Katie Holmes. Though there's more emphasis on plot and character development than in most comic book adaptations, that doesn't mean Nolan has skimped on any of the action sequences. Each set piece is done perfectly, leaving the audience breathless. THE DARK KNIGHT is filmmaking at its best; its subject matter may be dark and depressing, but it's tough not to feel exhilarated by its artistry when the credits begin to roll.

Don't Miss This If You Can Help It.

Funny but, this is the first Batman feature film that doesn't incorporate the word "Batman" in its title.

There never has been a more exciting time in my life when The Dark Knight showed up at the Box Office. I paid my ticket and then sat back and enjoyed the film better than ever. The reason I enjoyed this movie so much was that, before now, the Batman series of films seemed much more comic book than mimicking real life. The Dark Knight seems to somehow capture the essence that should always exist in the handover from comics to the big screen.

Christian Bale really didn't carry this film to greatness; it was The Joker (Heath Ledger) who made the film extraordinarily real in the sense that the criminal elements came together and alive on film with a burst of originality.

Bruce Wayne, who poses as a rich industrialist, sets out to dismantle the remaining criminal organizations that plague the city streets by creating his own persona known as Batman. Since we already know his intent from the last Film "Batman Begins", we pick up where the story left off in hopes that his complex plans will lead him down the road to success. Little do we know that The Joker will step into his life and thwart many of his plans to once and for all, rid Gotham City of the Low Life Scum that controls its underground.

Gotham City's District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) has the best line in the movie, which said, "You die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villain."

For the first time in feature film-making, IMAX cameras were utilized. Christopher Nolan had wanted to shoot in the IMAX format for years and wound up doing so. Six major action-heavy sequences, along with various high-altitude shots, were filmed on the IMAX ratio. These sequences are available on the Bonus Disc of the 2-Disc DVD Edition.

I'll give this an average rating of 5/5.

Best...Comic...Movie...EVER.

The Dark Knight is stunning, in every sense the word. Whether you look at the acting, the directing, the writing, or any other aspect of the movie, it's hard to find a weak point.

Nolan returns to do another incredible job at directing, and once again raises the bar for the Batman series. He creates a perfect balance between having The Dark Knight be a drama about the characters in it and an action-packed crime saga.

The acting alone is terrific. Christian Bale is a natural as Bruce Wayne, and also makes the best Batman I've seen yet, and by his side is Michael Caine, who just seems to fit perfectly as Alfred. Maggie Gyllenhaal does quite well as Rachel and Aaron Eckhart pulls off the transformation from Harvey Dent to Two-Face. Gary Oldman playing Gordon deserves an honorable mention. And then there's Heath Ledger, whose performance alone is nothing short of amazing. A few years ago most people would've said that he would be best known for and remembered by his starring role in Brokeback Mountain. Not anymore.

There's a constant internal struggle for Bruce Wayne, who does all he can to keep the difference between himself and Batman, and the difference between what is right and what has to be done. And all the while chaos reigns in the streets of Gotham, compliments of the Joker, who seems to be the one man who can bring down Batman.

All in all, there is nothing disappointing about The Dark Knight. For a movie that's two and a half hours long, there isn't a dull moment. Living up to the expectations and hype seemed impossible for it to do, but somehow The Dark Knight not only does, but surpasses it.

One of the best films of 2008!!

Created: 06/06/09
Absolutely love The Dark Knight for many reasons. One, I've always been a huge Batman fan. Two, Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker is the stuff of legend. Coming from a background in live theatre, his performance is one of the must sees to study the art of acting, the depth of character and commitment is phenomenal. Christian Bale delivers once again as a darker, more true to the comic book Batman, and his portrayal of Bruce Wayne is quite admirable. The rest of the cast is equally excellent. Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine are always on their A game; and The Dark Knight is no exception. Add is the great story, amazing special effects, music and the movie magic and you have, by far, one of the best movies in the Batman franchise and one of the best films of 2008. I real must see!!

Excellent Addition to the Batman Collection

Created: 23/01/09
The Dark Knight is another hit from the super hero movie genre. I love Heath Ledger’s performance. Probably one of the darkest characters ever brought to the big screen. You can feel the insanity oozing from the moment he enters the picture.
The movie is darker than the previous one, but holds true to the actual Batman comic book feel. A riveting performance from Christian Bale and Aaron Eckhart. If you haven’t seen this action-packed movie yet, get up and rent it today (or better yet, buy it on eBay).
Only bad thing I have to say about the movie is that it is long. You could say you get your money’s worth of film in this purchase. There is a point when it feels like the movie should be over and it just keeps going. It feels like they were trying to put too much into one movie and you have too many characters for proper character development in the amount of time that is given. Still, even with this down side, it is a must see on my scale.
The special edition adds even more excitement with some special features including some IMAX footage of some of the intense action scenes in the highest format possible.
