Who Am I?

I am a programmer/gamer/computer enthusiast and bought myself this screen because I'm finally upgrading from a Toshiba laptop that finally quit. I invest a lot of time on a computer, so I felt entitled to one of the biggest displays on the market. I bought it along with a very powerful graphics-oriented machine.

For Computer Gaming

All I can say is "Holy ----." This screen makes gaming one heck of an experience. Above all other games, I'm a StarCraft II player, and on this screen, with highest graphics settings employed, the game is just breathtaking. Bear in mind that graphics cards' effectiveness diminish the larger your screen is, so pay attention to performance across different resolutions when buying one. This screen is big enough that someone watching from the back of the room can see quite well what's going on.

For Video Gaming

The amount of input support offered by this monitor is very generous. Right now my monitor is sitting on my desk with a three cables running into the back. One is a component cable attaching my Nintendo Wii, one is an HDMI cable for the PS3, and of course, one is a DVI for my computer. By simply switching the display mode with the buttons on the side of the monitor you can quickly switch which device the screen is displaying. PS3 games look great on this monitor, since it easily displays the 1080p output of HDMI. Though the monitor lacks speakers, it provides audio-out ports. Cables like HDMI which send audio need a way to play the audio, so an auxiliary sound cable can be used to reroute the audio from the monitor to your speakers. Wii games looks as good as they'll ever look, but sit a bit further away, because the Wii's native output is 480p, which ends up delivering pretty poor quality up close.
My only complaint about this monitor for gaming purposes is a slight input lag (meaning everything the monitor displays onscreen is a fraction of a second late). It becomes very obvious to me when I play quick-response/fast-paced games like Super Smash Bros Melee, Mega Man 9, or Contra Rebirth. I was pretty disappointed, because I understood that computer monitors were free from this type of lag common to HDTV's (competitive gamers play on CRT monitors which have virtually no input lag by their very nature). It's only about two frames, which almost no one will notice or care about, but if you are a competitive Street Fighter player, you will notice it and it will bug you to no end. I need to point out that I don't know if this input lag applies to PS3 games, which I don't play. It may only be due to the transmission medium of the component cable the Wii uses.

As a Desktop Computer

Thankfully, there is no input lag at all when the input is from a computer. The movements of the mouse are one-to-one. What else is there to say? Your screen is huge, you can have giant, awesome desktop backgrounds, and you can have multiple windows open at once for a great programming or any workstation environment. It's big enough for multiple people to watch movies on as well.

Bottom Line

This is a beautiful guilty pleasure for anyone who is willing to spend this much money on a screen. It's a great feeling every time someone new sees it-- they will invariably comment on its size. Highly recommended if you want the best computer gaming experience for yourself. Also, excellent for engineers who use software tools with large, abundant user interfaces and can benefit from lots of workstation space.

Just a quick note to share my experience with this monitor. First of all, the image quality is excellent. There are some minor inconsistencies in the backlight, but with that said, I believe that it is better that any other sub-$2000.00 monitor. If you have never used a monitor this large, it may be worth mentioning that a monitor of this size takes some getting used to. It takes a physical turn of the head to see the full extent of the screen. this is not a problem with the U3011 in particular, but with any monitor this large.

On the plus side, I found that the extra screen real estate was liberating. Not only could I get two full-blown applications up on the screen side by side, but I also gained a lot of vertical space. Compared to a 1280x1024 or even 1920x1080 monitor, the U3011's 1600 vertical pixels really do reveal a lot more content. For example, when viewing a PDF, the displayed image is actually somewhat larger than real life, so one can easily see and read a full page...or two full pages for that matter. Web pages take on a whole new dimension and vertical scrolling is greatly reduced. There is so mush information of the screen that it can actually be distracting at times.

I came from a dual monitor setup, so I was used to having a lot of pixels, but with dual monitors, one can configure the screens so that they are more on-axis. With a 30-inch monitor, significant portions of the screen are always off-axis.

Because of the off-axis issue, certain area of the screen will appear brighter than others and colors will tend to shift slightly. The U3011 uses IPS technology, so off-axis performance is better than any monitor that uses TN technology (which the vast majority of LCD monitors use), but even so, you might want to think about it.

One peculiar problem that I noticed was that the screen throws off so much light that it actually created a glare on my keyboard, to the point that the keys could not be seen. I am a touch typist, but even so, not being able to see the keys at all was uncomfortable for me. I found myself using a an extra lamp to put some light on the keyboard, which of course washed out the monitors to some extent. I even bought a back-lit keyboard, but it was not bright enough to overcome the glare from the monitor. Be aware too that the U3011's CF backlight generates considerable heat.

For me, it was a love/hate situation. I argued with myself right up to the end of my 30-day return window. In the end, what sealed the fate of the monitor was that it made a noise that bothered me. I went to a lot of trouble to build a very quiet PC for myself, so the monitor was the loudest thing in the room. At first I thought it had a fan because there was a mechanical character to the noise, but after searching around on the, I finally came to realize that the noise was only present when the monitor's brightness was set to less than 90 percent.

For those who have very bright rooms, maybe this would not be an issue, but my office has more subdued lighting, so I simply had to turn it down. If you calibrate the monitor (as I did), you will find that it calibrates best down around the minimum brightness setting.

For what it's worth, I went back to a dual monitor setup, using two 24" 1920x1200 monitors mounted on the Ergotron stand that I used with my previous setup. There are trade-offs, but I have more pixels, I am more on-axis, there is less glare, less heat, and for me, a better experience.

I went with this monitor for personal use to replace my old FE2111SB CRT and I am very satisfied with it. It has almost every video port type available, although I'd recommend using the display port interface to be able to run it at the native 2560x1600. The amount of space available at that resolution is equivalent to a pair of medium size monitors, and without the annoying screen break in the middle too. Bright and colorful scenes show up very well on it, although the limited dynamic range inherent to all LCD monitors obscures visibility into dark areas (I'm used to the CRT which didn't have this issue), which is a problem if you're looking for that sniper hidden in the shadows of the collapsed building. This is the only reason the picture quality isn't 5/5. Other than that, the picture given by the H-IPS front panel is amazing.

The monitor is very bright, I believe its using a CCFL backlight because it takes a couple minutes to get to full brightness after powering up. The side panel menu control button lights up when you put your hand near it, which is a nice improvement over having to fumble for the right buttons to press in the relative darkness at the edge of a bright screen. I didn't notice any blurring when I tested a few FPS titles on it. The stand doesn't allow the monitor to swivel but after hooking up the cables I didn't care about this.

I purchased this monitor refurbished at 40% off Dell's new price, so it was definitely a great value for the money. I've had it for about a month now and haven't noticed any defects. Overall its hard to find bad things about it other than the cost, although many other H-IPS 2560x1600 monitors out there go for a lot more.

I went from 2 24" eye infinity monitors to this for the higher resolution for gaming. Absolutely best decision I made! I even went back and played Doom3 AGAIN, and seen things I never seen before. Amazing monitor, and a great price fast shipping with this vendor. The clarity is perfect, colors perfect. SO crystal clear, I even got new glasses to enjoy it more. You will NOT be disappointed with this monitor!

Grear picture, a lot of features especially for a 30", this monitor is the king. Just make sure you have the right cable and video card. I went from three monitors side by side to this puppy and a cintiq for art and I couldn't be happier. I love the 10x16 aspect ratio. Can watch full HD and still have available realestse.

Best purchase I've made for the studio in years.
