Campy "Dick" is a hit!
Created: 12/10/08
For those of you who thought "Batman & Robin" was a campy film, you ain't seen nothing yet! Warren Beatty stars & directs this ultra campy adaptation of legendary comic crime fighter Dick Tracy! The makeup & costumes are over the top as are the cars & even the building! Everything is done in flashy bright colors & yeah that goes for the buildings too! BUT, if you can overlook the gaudy sets & costumes, you will find a gritty crime story played out very tongue in cheek!
Beatty is as mentioned Dick Tracy, a cop who takes on mob boss Big Boy Caprice, played by Al Pacino & is as far away from Michael Corleone as you can get! Along the way, Tracy must deal with his long time girlfriend Tess Trueheart(Glenne Headly), a Nightclub Siren with the hots for him: Breathless Mahoney(Madonna), a crooked DA out to foil him(Dick VanDyke) & a cantankerous orphan.
For a campy thriller, this movie has unbelievable star power! Besides those already mentioned, this film stars Dustin Hoffman, James Caan, Mandy Patinkin, Catherine O'Hara, William Forsythe, Charles Durning, Paul Sorvino, Marshall Bell, Kathy Bates, Colm Meaney, Michael J. Pollard & Mary Woronov. The biggest problem here is that most of the cast you will hardly recognize if at all! The costumes are padded, the makeup is caked on, features are accented & hair doos are wild! You can watch this movie a few times & still never figure out who everyone is!
This film offers up a lot of action & thrills + a few heartwarming moments, but there is also a decent amount of tongue in cheek humor! Pacino's dance routine is not to be missed! Except for some of the violence, there is really nothing from prohibiting younger viewers from watching this film as there is really no sexual situations, besides Madonna falling out of her costumes(& that is a surprise how?) & no really off color language. Beatty keeps it pretty clean!

Madonna was born to play this role

Breathless is Madonna or visa versa. Madonna really gets into this role. Its a shame she was overlooked for an oscar nomination..but thats what happens when your larger than life persona and career achievements overshadows your talents in other artistic genres.
A must see for any fan, or comic book junky that loves this famous comic strip Detective, Dick Tracy. I would also recommending you pick up the "I"M BREATHLESS SOUNDTRACK" to really get into this films music. The songs are really amazing. The song "SOONER OR LATER" won an OSCAR for BEST ORIGINAL SONG FROM A FILM .
Warren beatty is also great in this film and he made sure to direct this as though you were reading the comic strip, by using 5 distinct colors for the film. Don't miss it. One of my fav movies of all time

Comic book movies strike again

What can you say about this 1990's cult classic hit? A bombshell at the box office but this has to be one of the best films of that year. Al Pachino was nominated for best supporting actor, although he lost. But that just goes to show how great this movie was. I was 12 years old when it came to the theater and I fell in love with it. My parents even tried to buy a copy for me when it came to VHS, but it was $100.00!!! Movies back then weren't cheap. Now I can enjoy a brand new DVD from ebay for less than ten dollars! My have times have changed. I have not received it yet, but my girl friend cant wait to watch it with me (she does not think this movie should have been made). But none the less, if you like cheesy actors playing cheesy comic book heroes and villains, then this is for you.

Dick Tracy (2002, DVD)
Created: 13/07/07
The movie is based on a comic strip by the same name. It follows police detective Dick Tracy in his endless efforts of getting main bad guy gangster Big Boy (played by Al Pacino). It is very truthful to its comics origin, the acting is great with Al Pacino and Dustin Huffman to strengthen the bill, and probably some of the best make-up for that particular period(1990). one of the only things that I would change is that they tried to fit tons of characters established over decades into 90 minutes that did not work so well. This movie is not a masterpiece but is sure a lot of fun

Childhood Memories

This film is art. The colors and costumes make it feel like a come-to-life comic strip. Multiple talented actors/actresses tell the story grandly. I watched this movie very often with my father as a child so I know the details and cherish them. The only downfall of the DVD is there are no special features, huge disappointment.
