A Players rock-n-roll axe
Created: 08/08/09
These are wonderful guitars. They're lighter than a LP and have more punch than a Strat. I've got nothing against either of those guitars, but the compact size and minimal weight of the SG combined with the humbucking pickups is a winning combination. If you move around a lot while playing, on stage or otherwise, you'll like this guitar. And keep in mind, Gibson introduced the SG as the New and Improved Les Paul. I started with an SG Special as I already had a Strat and a LP, and then I got a Standard and recenty picked-up a Custom Shop version. They're wonderful guitars, versatile enough to play about whatever you want, and as a rule they won't break the bank. The Special, even with it's minimal pricing, will sound every bit as good as the Standard, most LPs, and give you better output (without pedals and such) than anything Fender offers (in my opinion.) The downside is the appearance. You don't run across many show SGs. Even my CS version looks pretty tame, no flaming, no quilting, and a flat top. That aside, pick one up and play it. If you're a die hard Strat or LP player you'll have to adjust marginally to the neck but start with some simple jammin' rock and go from there. I think you'll be favorably impressed, just as Pete Townsend, Angus, Page, Hendrix and countless others have been.

Buying Used

Always wanted an sg but went with Les Pauls instead. I guess it always felt more traditional. Buying a used sg was the best move I could make. If I didn't like it well then it really didn't cost to much. But if I got a good one and gave it a chance I just might like it. So I bought a Black Sg Special with some covered pickups. Still in good shape with no real wear to notice, I was shocked just how much I would like this axe. Nice clean sounds and great dirty tones. This axe is made for classic rock, Slidin' dirty blues and could pass for a good lead country axe. I'm very happy to find a good one used and in my toy money range. SG - TRY ONE, THEY REALLY ARE COOL. If you have a first axe, no problem the sg is a perfect backup axe. Or when your back acts up from the Paul, you can go lite for a few tunes.

Gibson SG Special Faded Brown

Likes:
Gibson quality, good fretwork, good tonewoods, nice vintage neck profile
Dislikes:
Pots should be 500k instead of 300k gives a muddy tone. Modern pickups just don't sound good, the exception being the lead pickup. The finish is the other sore point. Although pretty cool but it offers no protection.
Comments:
I think they should at least spray a clear coat over it. The Melody Makers actually have a better finish. Thin body like the Melody Maker. Would be a better choice with a standard size SG body. Raising the price $100 for a better finish and thicker body would not hurt sales but probably increase them.

This guitar has character....well worn, but I didn't care, at $420 this was a steal, If you never played an ebony fretboard before you have no idea what you're missing! Although the only original parts on this were the pickguard and pickups, and bridge and tail piece, this was a great guitar to restore to it's original state. I gutted the pickups in favour of EMG's 81/85, so new pots, the exact Gibson tuners, correct knobs, and strap buttons, new Gibson pickguard...and this is the guitar my friends say "wow".
