The Grey (Blu-ray/DVD, 2012, 2-Disc Set, Includes Digital Copy; UltraViolet)

Joe Carnahan, Liam Neeson, Frank Grillo|Theatrical release: 2012 | Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

An action thriller not meant for the faint-hearted, “The Grey” is an unnerving saga of a group of rough oil riggers who survive a plane crash in the harsh Alaskan wilderness; battling fatal injuries and a ferocious pack of insatiable wolves, these survivors have to make their way towards civilization before their time runs out. Unlike other action films, “The Grey” has a deep philosophical overtone to it. There are no heroes and no villains; “The Grey” is purely about the grit to go on with life despite crushing odds. With haunting visuals and a chilling soundtrack, this two-disc set will punch the living daylights out of you. Featuring deleted scenes and a commentary by the director Joe Carnahan, this two-disc set is sure to keep you engaged for a full 118 minutes.

Editorial reviews

"There are some crackling action sequences and gory highlights, and the cast is uniformly good in surprisingly fleshed-out roles."
Film Comment - Laura Kern (01/01/2012)

"What is surprising is how poetic the movie is, partly thanks to its high-lonesome sound design and the desolate beauty of its visuals, but mostly because of its star, Liam Neeson."
Movieline - Stephanie Zacharek (01/26/2012)

3 stars out of 5 -- "There's time for some conversation among the men, and this film, directed by Joe Carnahan and written by him and Ian Mackenzie Jeffers, treats them as individuals..."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (01/25/2012)

"[T]he film takes some time to let its characters ruminate, by way of dialogue, on their circumstances, which gives THE GREY a distinctly late 20th century feel....Neeson holds it together from first to last."
Los Angeles Times - Michael Phillips (01/27/2012)

"Expected man-versus-wild, man-versus-absent-God themes ring more true than usual here....Plenty of chase scenes and gory encounters keep tension high."
Hollywood Reporter - John DeFore (01/17/2012)

4 stars out of 5 -- "[W]hat drives the film is a titanic performance from Neeson....It's up there with his most commanding work."
Total Film - James Mottram (04/01/2012)

"Here, Neeson is all the more intense for being allowed to use his natural accent....THE GREY has a real sense of physical peril..."
Sight and Sound - Kim Newman (03/01/2012)

"Liam Neeson anchors the film solidly as a oil-rigger who leads a group of plane-crash survivors through the wolf-filled Alaskan wilderness…"
A.V. Club - A.V. Club (05/16/2012)

Liam Neeson and six unknowns: guess who's the last man standing?

 | No, I would not recommend this product.

I am probably the only person in the world who did not find this film thrilling. The Alaskan scenery was beautiful, and Liam Neeson delivered an excellent performance. But, let's face it, a major reason for viewing a wilderness survival film is to see who lives and who dies. When seven men survive a plane crash, and one is Liam Neeson and the others are little-known actors who are bundled in heavy coats, all looking and behaving in similar fashion, it's easy to guess which men are cannon fodder...or, in this case, wolf food. The wolf attacks are very graphic, but after awhile the horror pales in comparison with the predictability of seeing the men picked off one by one. Toward the end of the film, with three men standing, one guy gets tired of walking and tells the others to leave him behind. His reason? What he has just experienced in the wilderness was so exciting and awesome that he can't bear to return to his mundane job. Really? Working beside a bunch of other men isn't nearly as much fun as watching them get slaughtered? If you agree, you'll like THE GREY. I just found it bloody and depressing.

The Grey is basically everything I wanted that movie to be. The cast is fantastic, their actions are mostly believable, and there's this meaning to everything that really speaks to you.

The Grey is a grainy thriller that knocks the wind out of you on more than one occasion. In fact, it's rare that the movie actually allows you to catch your breath. Everything is such a raw, vicious, and brutal test of faith. It's fantastically violent and Liam Neeson is superb

Superbly acted and directed. Extraordinary soundtrack. Riveting plot. Poignant, eternal themes. If you ever pondered the statement, "To be or not to be, that is the question," you will certainly appreciate the battle these characters waged.
