When I saw this coin on ebay, I just had to have it. I had never heard that in 1892 there was a 400 year anniversary exposition in Chicago of the Columbus voyages. I did the research on the coin and found that in 1892 and 1893 the US minted commemorative coins to mark the occasion of the exposition. While this coin is not valuable in a money sense, in a history sense it really is worth collecting.

For a 119 year old coin, it's a great piece of history. You hold the 1st. US commerative half dollar. With only two and a half million coins produced, between 1892 & 1893, it's bound to be a "winner" in the numismatic community. I have aquired these beautiful half Dollars for a few years now, and believe the rarity, beauty, low mintage & falling value of the dollar, will cause this particular coin to raise in value. Perhaps, more than a "typical" 100+ year old 90% U.S. Silver Coin...

The first American Commemorative half-dollar. A nice coin to own that you can buy for close to silver value in circulated condition. Good for a nice gift for a young collector.

I buy silver halves as a hobby - sometimes as an investment. Because this is the first US event commemorative (I believe) it is of a little more interest to me and the coins are within my financial collecting limits. The Columbian Expositions and the Washington halves are favorite gifts to give.
