Synopsis
J.R.R. Tolkien's classic prelude to his Lord of the Rings trilogy Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum. Written for J.R.R. Tolkien's own children, The Hobbit has sold many millions of copies worldwide and established itself as a modern classic.

J.R.R. Tolkien's classic prelude to his Lord of the Rings trilogy featuring cover art by Caldecott Honor winning children's book illustrator Peter Sís, this edition of The Hobbit has been specially formatted for young readers. Larger print size and wider margins provide reading ease for the youngest Tolkien fans. This quality digest edition also includes interior maps and original interior illustrations by J.R.R. Tolkien. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar.

J.R.R. Tolkien's own description for the original edition: If you care for journeys there and back, out of the comfortable Western world, over the edge of the Wild, and home again, and can take an interest in a humble hero (blessed with a little wisdom and a little courage and considerable good luck), here is a record of such a journey and such a traveler. The period is the ancient time between the age of Faerie and the dominion of men, when the famous forest of Mirkwood was still standing, and the mountains were full of danger. In following the path of this humble adventurer, you will learn by the way (as he did) -- if you do not already know all about these things -- much about trolls, goblins, dwarves, and elves, and get some glimpses into the history and politics of a neglected but important period. For Mr. Bilbo Baggins visited various notable persons; conversed with the dragon , Smaug the Magnificent; and was present, rather unwillingly, at the Battle of the Five Armies. This is all the more remarkable, since he was a hobbit. Hobbits have hitherto been passed over in history and legend, perhaps because they as a rule preferred comfort to excitement. But this account, based on his personal memoirs, of the one exciting year in the otherwise quiet life of Mr. Baggins will give you a fair idea of the estimable people now (it is said) becoming rather rare. They do not like noise.

Whisked away from his comfortable, unambitious life in his hobbit-hole by a wizard and a company of dwarves, Bilbo Baggins finds himself caught up in a plot to raid the treasure hoard of a large and very dangerous dragon. Illustrations.

I loved being enveloped in Middle-Earth!

It is a wonderful book. So rich with adventure and such and easy read. Great for the younger teens/pre whom might have a harder time reading The Lord of the Rings. Exquisite writing, of course, beautiful story and not quite as much poetry and long details as his other works; which works great for an easy, fun read. Recommended for ages preteen and up! Adults will love it too. Plus, if you are waiting to see what happens with the movies, the book is much shorter.

This book has always been one of my favorites. I have had to buy additional copies since friends and family love to borrow this book. It's wonderful to have a book that appeals to teenagers but is still an entertaining read for an adult. I look forward to reading it again in the future.

Well, I didn't actually buy this copy for myself, I bought it for my best friend becuase it's THE BEST BOOK EVER! Okay, no, it's not the best book ever, but it is one of my favorite books and I would recommend that anyone and everyone reads it. I have read it five times and have had an enjoyable experience each time. Tolkien's work is very impressive, as the themes in the novel are what we commonly read today, although they were not popular at the time. I admire what he accomplished and am very grateful for the books he produced.
