Ice Age: The Meltdown (DVD, 2006, Full Frame)

Ray Romano, John Leguizamo|Theatrical release: 2006 | Rating: PG (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

In this computer-animated sequel to ICE AGE, prehistoric creatures face a new problem: their icy world is melting. Manny (voiced by Ray Romano), seemingly the last woolly mammoth on Earth, and his pals--a saber-toothed tiger named Diego (Denis Leary) and a sloth named Sid (John Leguizamo)--are perfectly content in their ice-covered valley. When con artist Fast Tony (Jay Leno) claims that their home will soon be underwater and the world is about to end, they think he's kidding. But to everyone's surprise, the shady fast talker is right. Manny, Diego, and Sid soon discover that the valley will flood in days. Following the advice of a vulture (Will Arnett) who is hoping for the worst, a bevy of animals begin to make their way to the end of the valley in search of a boat that will save them from the flood.En route, sad sack Manny is startled when he encounters another woolly mammoth, Ellie (Queen Latifah). As happy as Manny is to see another one of his kind, there's a problem: Ellie is convinced that she's a possum like her hyperactive brothers, Crash (Seann William Scott) and Eddie (Josh Peck). And to make matters worse, the melting of the ice has released some ferocious sea creatures that had literally been frozen in time. Will Ellie finally realize that she's a gigantic woolly mammoth and not a pint-sized possum? Is it really the end of the world? Can Manny and the rest of the animals in the valley survive the impending flood? And will Manny be able to leave the past behind now that he knows he's not alone? Saber-tooth squirrel Scrat and his quest for an acorn once again provide additional comic relief throughout the film.

Ice Age The Meltdown Posted by CK-Auctions

The original Ice Age was a surprise hit for me. I was sure that it would be another dud animated movie. For a while it seemed that if your name wasn't Pixar that it was impossible to make a good animated feature. Even Disney, the company that invented the animated feature, had a string of flops with Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Treasure Planet, and Brother Bear all being less than spectacular. (Okay, I'm not listing Lilo and Stitch which was excellent.) So I didn't have my hopes up when I first saw Ice Age and I was pleasantly surprised. The movie had a good, solid story and a lot of laughs. It was the type of family friendly movie that both kids and adults can enjoy, something that's all too rare nowadays. Four years later, Fox went back to the characters and made a sequel: Ice Age the Meltdown. While this second film isn't quite as good as the original (how many sequels are?) it still has a good amount of charm and looks wonderful on this Blu-ray disc.

This was a funny film that both my children and I enjoyed, but it wasn't without its flaws. On the good side, there film was consistently funny, with jokes and gags coming at regular intervals so the movie never become boring or slow. The characters have the same personalities that they had the first time around too; Manny is the loner, Sid is annoying, and Diego is the tough silent predator. The new characters are cute too. The possum twins, sort of pre-historical versions of Bart Simpson, are the comic reliefs who steal the show.

On the down side, this time around the plot is much simpler and a bit too thin. A lot of the movie feels like filler; funny filler but padding none the less. Scrat, the squirrel who is always trying to get an acorn, is given much more screen time in this film and while his exploits are generally humorous none of his adventures advance the plot at all. There were several other scenes, the mini-sloths that started worshiping Sid and the singing vultures to name only two, which have nothing to do with the rest of the movie. I think the main problem is the lack of a meaty. The first movie had the animals trying to return the human child to his tribe, the danger of the saber-tooth tigers waiting to ambush them, and the three main characters learning to depend on each other. This film only has the danger of the advancing water. Manny's search for another mammoth is solved early on, and the water predators aren't really a threat for most of the movie. If they could have created another subplot or two this movie would have been much stronger. As it is, the Meltdown is a good family movie that doesn't quite live up to the standard that was set by its predecessor.

It's Better The Second Time Around,

Created: 27/10/06
This was HILLARIOUS!!! This was far better than the first movie. John Leguizamo was brilliant as usual, the perfect voice for Sid. And it was great having the voice of Queen Latifah as Ray Ramano's love interest. This movie was a comedy-lovers delight. And of course the squirrel, Scrat, was genius from day one. Every scene he's in is like watching a great silent movie. That actually requires a lot of skill on behalf of the storytellers and animators to create scenes without dialogue that are equally as entertaining and engaging as those with dialogue. The latter is one reason why the first "Ice Age" film distinguished itself. So the team at Blue Sky Studios should be congratulated. This is a sharp movie. No sophomore slump. I have the first one on DVD and I can't wait to get this incredible sequel. Everything just seems more developed and elaborated upon this time around. Computer-animated films were still in their infancy when the first film got released. But the technological progress that has been made since then is obvious and it's been put to good use throughout the movie. I really enjoyed "Ice Age 2." So if you were a fan of the first one, then don't forget to get the sequel when it hits stores this November.

Ice Age: The Meltdown....Slightly watered down

Created: 21/01/07
This is a cute sequel to the first Ice Age. In this one, Manny is stricken with the other "last" mammoth on earth. Sid seems to have gotten smarter and Diego shows his weakness.
As far as sequels go, this one holds true to the theory that the first is always the best and the second, usually not so great. Definitely entertaining, but lacking in comedy. The sequel follows Manny, Sid and Diego as they journey to the shelter, which resembles Noah's Ark, because their world is melting. Along the way, they meet up with another mammoth (voiced by Queen Latifah) who thinks she's a 'possum, and her two "brothers". One disaster after another befall the pack.
I did love that the makers brought Scrat back for round two though. The poor squirrel beast tries to hold on to his acorn and just causes more pain for himself. The fight scene with the pirahna-type fish was wonderfully done and had me rolling.
Seeing Diego lose his cool over water and showing his true yellow, was a let-down though. But the "brothers" brought some funny to the movie as they constantly attempt to "block" Manny from any notions of a love interest with his new mammoth/possum soon-to-be-girlfriend.
The story is entertaining and the kids loved it very much. Definitely a must have if you already have the first Ice Age. And a welcome addition to any road collection for those long trips with the kids.

Scrat Does It Again!

Created: 09/12/06
This movie wasn't as good as the first one. It lacked something in the storyline, it wasn't as strong as the first movie. Scrat (the squirrel) really made this movie though. He was a lot funnier than in the first one, it helps that they show him more.

The story starts out with Sid, Manny, and Diego. They soon find out that their ice world is melting and if they don't move to higher ground they'll soon be under water as well. On their new migration Manny finds another mammoth who thinks she is a possum. He then spends his time trying to convince her that she's a mammoth, of course they both think the other is crazy. I won't spoil the ending for those who haven't seen it, but you will definitely enjoy this movie if you liked the first one.
