Album Notes
Originally released on Island (9116).Traffic: Chris Wood (flute, saxophone, electric saxophone, organ, percussion); Steve Winwood (flute, bass instrument); Jim Capaldi.Personnel: Steve Winwood (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, electric piano, organ, bass guitar, percussion); Jim Capaldi (vocals, drums, tambourine, percussion).Liner Note Author: Brian Hogg.Recording information: Island Studios (02/1970-04/1970); Olympic Studios, London, England (02/1970-04/1970).Although JOHN BARLEYCORN MUST DIE was originally intended as Steve Winwood's post-Blind Faith solo debut, Winwood and producer/label head Chris Blackwell first drafted Jim Capaldi to provide lyrics, and then Chris Wood dropped by to add his familiar reeds, and almost by accident, Traffic was reborn. This was a different, and better, Traffic than the ill-fated quartet lineup with Dave Mason, which never entirely settled on an artistic direction. The sound of JOHN BARLEYCORN MUST DIE, on the other hand, remained the template for the rest of the reunited band's career--long, organically developed songs with a subtle jazz-rock feel, powered by Capaldi's percussion and Winwood's organ. "John Barleycorn," a traditional English folk song about the process of brewing ale (not, as the liner notes mistakenly claim, a call for temperance), here becomes a pastoral reverie carried along by flute and acoustic guitar, and proves to be the record's highlight. However, the quality of the other songs, particularly the instrumental opener, "Glad," and the outstanding ballad "Empty Pages," is nearly as high.

John Barleycorn Must Die Not Forgotten

Created: 04/08/07
I love this music. I bought two copies of this CD, "John Barleycorn Must Die" by Traffic. One copy went to my sister who originally introduced me to the fine sound recording originally released in 1970 and the other copy to me. Once the opening track entitled "Glad" began to play, both my sister and I remembered the happy, jazzy sound of this masterpiece. If a person appreciates great musicianship, arrangement and storytelling presentation in song lyrics, this release has no equal and is an example of unprecedented genius.
Anyone that states he or she has the best collection of contemporary music of the 20th century and does not have this CD, is grossly mistaken. On a scale of 1-100, with 100 being excellent, "John Barleycorn Must Die" gets all the points. Young musicians today should study this brilliant work of art and take notes...no pun intended!

"John Barleycorn Must Die"{Remaster}Traffic 1970

Traffic's 1970 offering is one of the more eclectic gems of the era.The soulful fusion of "Glad","Freedom Rider"and "Empty Pages",the veneration of English Folk music with a definitive version of "John Barleycorn",puts the band on equal footing with other progressive visionaries such as Fairport Convention,The Pentangle,Buffallo Springfield and other favorites.Having had the vinyl since the "days",the extra tracks are a plus.

I was happy to find it when searching music on ebay,

Created: 08/04/07
The last time I heard the songs, was back in the early 70's, and it was on a alblum, Iam sure it went to cassette, and now CD. I had been think about the alblum for a long time, music going through my head all to time, I didn't think I would ever find it again, When I did I had to have it, bid for it and waited for the count down, to see if I was the highest bidder, I was very happy when I won and received the CD.
