Top cleaning performance & built to last a lifetime.
I just bought a Kirby Diamond G, after owning a Kirby Dual 50 for 40 years. I still have the D-50, by the way ...it was just factory rebuilt for the fourth time, and I will be using it on the upper level of my two-story house.
This illustrates what I regard as the only disadvantage of the "Generation" and "Sentria" models. They are heavy machines for wives to carry up and down the stairs, so I will now have a Kirby on each floor.
However, the positive side of their weight is their all-metal construction. They truly are built to last a lifetime, and I have not found another upright vacuum that does as good a job on carpet. Plus, the self-propelled drive feature makes cleaning effortless and forward/reverse is instant and self-sensing.
Cleaning efficiency and performance are tops with a Kirby, in my opinion.
The Kirby has a rug head design that has excellent airflow properties. It is airflow, not suction, that cleans a rug. Add to that, a height adjustment that allows one to compensate for different carpet thicknesses, and you get superior removal of the grit and dirt that causes worn spots in your high-traffic areas.
You always know when you hit the right height adjustment, as you can see the carpet being lifted right up off the underpad. When this happens, air is being pulled all the way through the entire carpet, carrying away the dirt. No other cleaner works as effectively ...most clean only the surface.
I chose the "Ultimate G Diamond Edition" model in particular, because I regard it as the best of the Kirby models built in the last 20 years. It has a two-speed motor, with a switch that allows you to reduce suction for cleaning throw rugs and lightweight area rugs, without having to stop, or stoop. I understand this feature was not carried over to the Sentria model, perhaps to save production cost(?)
To sum up, I chose my "Diamond G" primarily because of 40 years of ownership experience with a Kirby. In this day of cheaply-made, plastic-bodied vacuums that usually last three years, or less, and can't even come close to the cleaning job a Kirby will do ...well, you just couldn't sell me anything else.

What the Heck....
Well, what the heck... I may as well toss in my 2 cents worth for those of you considering the purchase of a Kirby... I purchased a Kirby from one of their door-to-door sales people back in the late 80's and he was no different in his approach than any other sales person who makes his living on commission. Any mature adult with any life experience has got to realize that a door-to-door sales person has room to bargain and that considered should never pay the full asking price. If you fell, or fall prey to their methods then it is your own fault. You should also realize that they have to earn a living and not expect them to give up their entire commission.
I felt as though I got an excellent deal from the sales person when he reduced his price to under half of what he initially asked. I knew he was still making money and he knew he was still making money and we both knew I was getting a quality product for the price.
The quality of the product is still evident to this day as that Kirby I purchased 20 years ago is still running strong and I have NEVER had a single problem with it.
I just purchased another one here on eBay late last week when I discovered they could be purchased on here for so cheap. My other Kirby is kept at my second home in the mountains where it's ability to handle tough work is needed.
If you are looking at purchasing one here on eBay, consider this as I did. Your typical vacuum runs about $150. If you have pets and children like I do you are lucky if that $150 vacuum will last 6 months. My kids destroy them in about 2 months on average. You can purchase one of these Kirby's on eBay in the $200 to $400 price range. I was able to get what appears to be a superbly refurbished Generation 5 with ALL of the accessories for approximately $260. If I get half the life out of it as I have my other Kirby it will have been worth every penny. Just do the math with the figures above, or use your own based on what you pay on average for a vacuum and how long they typically last.
I am thrilled I found these used Kirby's here on eBay going for such excellent prices. WHAT A DEAL [STEAL]!!! I can't wait to turn my kids lose one the Kirby when it arrives this week. I know they will not be able to destroy it or end up breaking a cheap plastic part because the Kirby is made with solid metal and is the M1 Tank of Vacuums.
It is true that you will not get the lifetime warranty that comes with one purchased by a salesperson in your home, but many of the ones offered on eBay by dealers come with a 2 to 10 year warranty by them. The likely hood of you needing repairs through a warranty though are exceptionally RARE. Like I said, and as those who own a Kirby and use it will tell you, they just don't have problems. They are built super strong like a Timex and keep running like the energizer bunny. :-)
I have used and abused the other one I have and it just keeps going as strong as ever! What routine end user cleaning and service that is needed is simple to perform and can be done in just a few minutes.
If you have been wondering if they are worth the money and if they perform as stated I assure you they are... Go for it! BUY ONE!
I am not affiliated with Kirby and have never worked for them. The opinions expressed are mine and mine alone and I have received nothing in return for them... I have made these comments because they are true and I am a satisfied customer!

Review of Kirby Ultimate G Vacuum Cleaner
I appreciate machines which are built with durability and high quality in mind. I already own two older models of Kirby vacuum cleaner, and they still run very well and perform exceptionally so I am familiar with the quality that was put into these machines. However, I bought this newer model because of the advances in technology since my previous models. The self-propelled Tech Drive System makes the operation of this machine almost effortless. With the modern collection system used in the Ultimate G model, I have noticed that dust does not collect on furniture as frequently as in the past. The bag is designed to keep even the finest grade particles within the bag and my experience has demonstrated that the system is working well. The unit I purchased included a wide variety of accessories, including a rug renovator which fluffs up the carpet where it had been matted from traffic flow. This accessory makes the carpet look almost like new. I have not yet used the rug shampooer attachment, but am confident that it will perform well. I like the fact that the housing of the Kirby vacuum cleaners are still made of a polished aluminum metal for durability, just as they have been since the company started decades ago. This emphasis on durability is one reason why it is still possible to purchase older Kirby vacuum cleaners that still perform very well. One of the downfalls of older Kirby vacuum cleaners is that they tend to be loud. I was surprised at how much quieter the new Ultimate G is even though the motor is powerful and provides great suction to the vacuum cleaner.
In time, the belt to the beater bar/brush will need to be replaced, just as in any upright vacuum cleaner. Since the early models of Kirby vacuum cleaner, there has been a mechanism which lifts the belt off the drive shaft to allow the belt to be easily removed. The same mechanism is used to set the new belt back on the drive shaft. In many machines on the market, removal of the belt requires removal of screws so that an access panel can be removed in order to access the belt which needs to be replaced. Replacing the belt will probably be the first service needed in any upright vacuum cleaner, with the exception of changing the bag.....if the unit has one. Before purchasing a new vacuum cleaner, be sure to find out what is involved in changing the belt so that you can make a good buying decision.
I don't feel like any review of a piece of machinery would be complete without commenting on the customer service quality. I have found that the service technicians and customer service people who help you maintain a Kirby vacuum cleaner are sincere in their desire to insure that their machines perform to the highest standards. The people I have worked with over the years have been helpful, courteous and have a true interest in maintaining high quality of workmanship and in providing great customer satisfaction.
If you are considering the purchase of a new vacuum cleaner, be sure to do some brand comparison research and ask a dealer for a demonstration of the Ultimate G or one of the other Kirby models. The investment in time would be valuable in helping you make a good purchase decision.

It's the last vacuum you'll have to buy...EVER!
My mother had a Kirby she bought in the 50's. I bought a Kirby Heritage more than 15 years ago with attachments. I recently bought an Ultimate G with attachments, and gave the Heritage to my daughter. My mother's Kirby was still working great after 35 years, and the Heritage I gave my daughter still works like new.
These new Ultimate G Kirbys are without a doubt, the best of the best. With the Tech-Drive, it's almost effortless to push the vacuum, and changing to canister or shampooer, or other attachments is easy. The HEPA bags are designed to bag virtually all dust and allergy particles and creepy mites and other microscopic critters that do live in your carpets. The brush bar you can actually hear working to clean the carpet, and the height adjustment is right at your foot. The Ultimate G Diamond Edition (one model newer than the Ultimate G) has a two speed motor switch. The slower speed is great for vacuuming throw rugs. There is virtually nothing this vacuum can't do, and they will last you a lifetime, and still be going strong.
You can buy lightweight plastic vacs, but none are built to last like the Kirby. I seriously doubt they will do a better job, and I'll bet they won't be doing the job for anywhere near as long as the Kirby. There's a reason Kirby has been around for about 100 years. They are built for the long run.

The Kirby is really an Ultimate Diamond!
The Kirby Company continues to provide long lasting vacuums that seem to go on for a lifetime. The Ultimate Diamond is probably the best one that they have ever produced. Besides it's beautiful coloring, shining aluminum body...you will find a strong machine that will renew aging carpet, pick up animal hair and keep your home sparkling clean for many years to come. I like it better than the newer Sentria; the Ultimate Diamond is just that strong workhorse of a vacuum that every family should have in the closet waiting to be called upon to take care of any household task needed.
