Movie synopsis
Three-star General Irwin (Robert Redford) was a prisoner of war in Vietnam and a revered hero in the Persian Gulf and Bosnian campaigns. Now, he has been court-martialed for disobeying orders and he is sentenced to serve time at The Castle, a maximum-security military prison run by Colonel Winter (James Gandolfini), a hard-nosed disciplinarian. A battle of wills soon emerges between the two men, as The Castle's prisoners and guards find themselves drawn to Irwin's natural leadership abilities. As Irwin inspires the prisoners to find the dignity and pride that they have lost, he threatens Winter's strict regime, leading to a conflict that can only have one winner. From Rod Lurie, West Point graduate and director of DETERRENCE and THE CONTENDER, comes this intense dramatic thriller featuring battles both psychological and military. Stars Redford and Gandolfini, joined by gifted newcomers Mark Ruffalo and Clifton Collins, Jr., give excellent performances as a group of very different military men thrown together into an ugly situation. Filmed on location at the now-closed Tennessee State Penetentiary, THE LAST CASTLE is a hard-edged tribute to courage, honor, and loyalty.

The warden(James Gandolfini)has his own agenda and mistreats the prisoners. One of the prisoners,a highly respected general played by Robert Redford,decides to take matters in his own hands and stand up to the corrupt warden. The 131 minute movie will grab your attention from the opening scene and keep you on the edge of your seat to the exciting explosive ending! Redford is in perfect form and delivers a fantastic performance! Gandolfini plays the perfect nemesis! I highly recommend this film and consider it one of the best movies of 2001!!!!!

) "The Last Caastle" is one of those movies that you can't stop watching until it is over! From the beginning, the impact is strong, the theme is well put, and the continuity very well connected. I am NOT a movie watcher very much, but after seeing "The Last Castle" on TV, I just had to have my own copy. James Gandolfini as always plays a super commander of the prison, and Robert Redford, and the rest of the cast are all top notch. I would recommend this movie with the most confidence to whoever I told about this movie, they would be very satisfied in seeing it. This movie is top noitch to me, and I will always cherish this one...it is a keeper! I recommend this one 1,000%!

The title does not describe the subject matter

The Castle was a part of the USDB (US Disciplinary Barracks) at Ft. Leavenworth. The scenario is not realistic in portraying the prisoner's life and rules of the DB. The set is not at Ft. Leavenworth even though the Ft. Leavenworth patch is worn/displayed on the uniforms. As a story, unrelated to reality, it is interesting and Robert Redford gives an excellent performance and is well supported by the cast. The Commandant is also a strong role and well played.
I cannot imagine DOD or the Army approving or supporting this movie as it does not reflect well on either the military or the reality of life in the USDB. I base my coments on my experience as a former military confinement officer who also had duty at the USDB.

The Last Castle

"The Last Castle" is a very underrated story of a highly respected 3 star General who is court marshalled for refusing an order to retreat and causing the deaths of several men under his command. Once in a military prison, he leads a revolt against a corrupt and brutal warden, who at first, didn't even believe the General should be in prison. If you liked "The Shawshank Redemption" you will like this movie

) This was a good movie..I had never compared a castle to a prison, but in so many ways they are alot the same...
Robert Redford does an outstanding acting job in this movie!
The end is sad, however it shows how one man can control thousands!
