There's No Crying In Baseball...
Created: 11/08/06
In 1943 when the ranks of professional male baseball players were leaving for the war, a group of ladies left their homes to become part of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League and kept baseball alive for a grateful nation. This is their story. Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) is the team's most gifted player, and the camaraderie and jealousy with her sister (Lori Petty) is part of this film's charm and complexity. Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) is the drunken ex-player and slob manager who eventually brings the team to success. Directed by Penny Marshall (BIG, AWAKENINGS) and also starring Madonna, Jon Lovitz and Bill Pullman.

A League of Their Own

This is a great movie with a superb cast. Well acted , World War II time period about professional Women's baseball. Covers the gamut as far as character study about the star players and coach, and shows the dedication of women in sports during a time period where the women belonged in the home. It shows another aspect of where women "picked up the ball and ran with it", (no pun intended) during a time when every available man was involved in the service of their country at war. Many movies, books and documentaries enlighten us to the fact that effectively women took the place of men in the industrial world, taking on out of character jobs such as welders, machinists, shipfitters and the like during the second World War and were instrumental in the Allied forces victory, but this fine film shows a lighter side with the "girls" keeping an American pastime thriving during a difficult time period.
This review may sound like I am promoting Women's Lib., but in reality, I had the pleasure of being involved as a driver for a University women's division 1 softball team for 7 years, and this film portrays the dedication and capabilities I witnessed without the ego problems common in other sports .
If your lookig for a lighthearted yet moving story about sports, I recommend this film highly. Definately 4 Stars in my Book.
Starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, Lori Petty.

an excellently directed film with an all-star cast

The "you can't miss" movie of 1992 and even today this film stands the test of time. Madonna shows her some of her comedic talents, tom hanks shows us why hes an Oscar winner, Geena Davis, is still an underrated talent and lots of great cameos. Based on a true story of women in baseball while men were sent off to war, its at times touching and at times makes you laugh out loud silly. Rosie O donnell is great in this one too. Theres 2 versions of this film out now on DVD including a LIMITED ED. Version with bonus footage. Do not miss it!

For the non-Baseball fanatic

For the non-basball fanatic who can't quote statistics from memory, this is a delightfully entertaining and historic movie about the history of baseball during the war years. Rather than focus on the game, it focuses on the lives of the people, the attitude of the nation and the humor and heartbreak of war.
Gina Davis, Lori Petty, Madonna ( at her best)and even Rosie O'Donnald is very good and I hate her. Tom Hanks does a memoriable performance as a has-been baseball player and takes on the job of Coaching the teams. Make no mistake, he plays a supporting role and the women give their best performances.
