Great way to expand wireless network
Created: 13/12/09
This product works great. The hardest part is getting it to communicate to your existing secure wireless network. The instructions fail to mention that inorder to get the expander to communicate you need to know the security settings of your current. It walks you through the steps, but I didn't know what I was doing I guess. After looking At my existing network settings I figured out that I needed the same Paraphrase for both. Love this expander man what a great solution to expand your wireless network.

The WRE54G is very useful for extending a wireless network to a greater distance. It expends the range of an existing wireless network. For instance, to an outside patio or deck to enjoy the weather while working. It has full encryption capabilities such that the network can be secured against unauthorized use.
The big disappointment is that the internal power board failed after 2 years of use. The unit had to be replaced. If there are competitive versions of this expander, I would try something else first. I can't recommend this unit to anyone.

Extremely hard to set up! Instructions not clear for windows 7. The disk included will not scan and find the expander. I had to put it on a windows XP machine to setup the product. The IP 192.168.1.240 will not work. I finally had to assign an IP of 192.168.1.2 and use my same network key of the router to get it to work. I worked for 3 days and googled everything possible to get this product to work in a secure environment.

Very complicated to set up

This is the older model of the expander, and after many attempts to set it up bouncing off a Verizon provided Fios wireless router, I have to say that the manner in which it needs to be setup if you have a password protected system is very difficult. If you know what a WEP, SSID, MAC Address and ISP address are and you know how to access a device by assigning it an address and then accessing it through a web page directed to your network, then you will probably have no problem with it. But if any of what I just wrote is foreign to you, you will need to spend a lot of time with it. In the end, I failed. I think because the newer Fios router just wouldn't play nice with the older Linksys expander. On the other hand, if you don't password protect your wireless, the auto configure button on the expander will do all of this for you.

I had a hard time to setup this product to work with my router. The automatic button and the setup CD did not help me at all. Finally it works after I setup manually. Unfortunately Linksys didn't give me this instruction. Instead I found it online in one of the technical forum. Linksys Tech support was not helpful either especially since my router is out of warranty.
