Great Real-Time Strategy game for beginners
This is a great game for people who are new to the RTS world of gaming and a must-have for LOTR fans. The "easy" mode (there are 3 levels of difficulty) of the game is slow-paced enough for even the complete newbie/casual gamer and stay that way. No need to keep clicking constantly just to stay alive :P
Other RTS games like Warcraft III are also great but can get difficult pretty quickly and require you to constantly click (training units, upgrading, building, etc).
However, hard-core gamers might find it "too easy" aka boring but who knows!

Great for the hard-core Gamer!
I've been a Tolkien fan since I was quite young, so was thrilled with the movies. This game has a lot of the movie graphics in it. For a hard-core computer gamer, this game may rank as awesome. But if you are like me, and play as a diversion, distraction, or for relaxation- I'm not so sure that you'll like it. While I was playing, I'd set it for easy, but it would reset for med-difficult. The one that I got had no instructions with it,and was nerve racking to try to scroll, plan work-able strategies for war & defense and impossible to get the system to do as it should have to carry out your plans.
But, I'm not a hard-core gamer, either. I'm a self taught user, and human logic and computer logic don't always mesh. After winning the fourth campaign for good, the computer decided I was far better at it than I thought I was, and threw the difficult settings at me with out my consent. After 3 days of frustration and getting nowhere with it, I decided to cut my losses, and uninstalled it. This is great for some people, but I'm not one of them.
I think I'll stick to Wik, & Fate, & Lilo & Stitch with the grandchild, and leave this one to a dedicated gamer,LOL!
Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth, A Mouthful!
You can tell I like this game right off the bat when I say that this is my second copy (for network play)! Battle for Middle Earth (BFME for short) is basically a Real-Time Strategy game themed for Lord of the Rings fans. Like most RTS games, it has "skirmish" mode (individual battles) and "campaign" mode (multiple battles following a storyline). In each battle, you build bases, train and upgrade troops, purchase Heroes who can use special powers and inspire troops close to them to improve their performance, and, of course, try to eliminate all enemies! Gameplay is most balanced between the various factions, and length can be tailored to suit by picking anywhere from 1 to 7 AI opponents. You can also play online with other humans, or over a network with AI and human players.
There are a few negatives, such as a rather unintelligent AI when set to easy (I guess that makes sense at that level), but these can easily be overlooked. Of note, BFME2 is also out, and offers a "looser" style of gameplay. There are more factions, and bases can be built anywhere, instead of set locations. But if you like to know what to expect in each battle, play the original!

A classic for all time, not just for LOTR's fans but for all!
| Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.
This is a great game! Not turn-based, but played in real-time, each scenario get progressively faster paced as you move along. With three levels - Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced - the game offers a challenge, but is still great fun for both LOTR's enthusiasts and casual admirers alike. The graphics are dated by today's (2014) standard, but not bad. And there are a couple of flaws (One glaring that comes to mind is that while playing Rohan - a horse battalion can somehow jump up onto to top of the wall from inside your fortress, and there it will stay. Can't get it down, can't kill it yourself, it's just stuck! Archers can move freely on top and back down from atop the walls, but not horse battalions!) Anyway, this is a really great game that offers hours and hours of unique game play. One can play as "Good" or "Evil" Campaigns... Or play through dozens of different "Scenarios" as either "Rohan", "Gondor", Mordor", or "Isengard". This leads to the possibilities well over a 100 play-throughs. Not only does the game offer the armies for each of the civilzation's, but coresponding heroes to go with each. From Gandalf, Aragorn, and Legolas...to Nazgul, and the Balrog. Each with their own "Special powers".
From unique buildings, to special powers...dedicated heroes, to real life actors voice-overs. Battle for Middle Earth has it all! It will stay a timeless classic. Not just for LOTR's nuts, but for all movie and gamer fans alike.
Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong!
LOTR Battle for middle earth
This game is really good but the only problem is the online playing. The downloader doesnt access the patches because EA is constanly expanding. However offline play is great anyway. This game is worth the money.
